IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.
What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It can be challenging for people above 50 to get good jobs in some countries. It can be because the employers think that young people are more enthusiastic and motivated and older people are not as serious about their jobs. Because they are close to the retirement age, which is 65 in most countries. Hiring companies can have a seperate quota for people of different age to solve this problem.
Some companies prefer younger people with same qualifications over older people, because they think that these people are more informed about the technology and social media. Nowadays technology has advanced a lot, Ai and automation is improving and most companies have some sorts of technology which the elder might not completely comprehend. Furthermore, a lot of jobs demand people with good social media pages, so their companies can have promotion. But people over 50 do not use social media a lot. People less than fifty might be more motivated and determined to do their jobs because they want further experience, whereas the opposite generation might not be more focused towards the job because they are close to retiring. For instance, many local buisinesses like bakeries or saloons etc prefer young adults because the people have a good following on social media and are generally more active on social platforms. This way they can increase the customers and perform tasks well too because they are considered active.
Several measures can be taken to reduce this issue, companies can have a quota for different ages so people of all ages with same experience get the chance to be employed. Companies can have a probation period where they can judge the skills and particiaption of their employees. In this way, many elder people who have difficulty in affording a livelihood can have an equal chance.
In conclusion, the hiring departments of buisinesses assume that older generation is not much determined as the younger generation because they are close to the age where they recieve pension. But these individuals should also be given equal chance if they have same experience through making allotments according to age.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you identify employers’ assumptions about older workers’ motivation, retirement, and familiarity with technology, then suggest age quotas and probation periods. The examples of local businesses using social media help illustrate one cause. However, some claims are broad or insufficiently explained—for example, that people over 50 “do not use social media a lot” and that younger workers are more motivated. The proposed quota is relevant, but you could explain how it would be applied fairly and how it would address employers’ concerns. The probation-period measure is also mentioned without showing why it would particularly improve older applicants’ prospects. Developing these points with clearer reasoning and a more specific example would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining causes, a paragraph proposing measures, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress in a sensible order, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. However, the opening paragraph introduces causes and a solution before the main discussion, so the essay’s organisation is not fully controlled. Some connections are also unclear: “This way” does not precisely identify which point it refers to, and the conclusion repeats the quota proposal rather than drawing together the main causes and solutions. Grouping each cause and its explanation more tightly, and using clearer references between sentences, would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “enthusiastic,” “automation,” “probation period,” and “livelihood.” These choices make the main ideas understandable, and you attempt to discuss employment and technology in relevant terms. However, some wording is imprecise or repetitive, such as “good jobs,” “people,” and “same experience.” There are also spelling errors, including “seperate,” “buisinesses,” “saloons,” and “recieve,” and some unnatural collocations, such as “good social media pages” and “perform tasks well too because they are considered active.” Aim for more precise employment-related expressions and check spelling carefully; this would make your argument sound more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “because,” “whereas,” and “where.” Most of the meaning remains clear, and the longer sentences show an attempt to explain relationships between ideas. Some grammatical errors remain, however. “Because they are close to the retirement age” is a sentence fragment, while “the elder might not completely comprehend” has an unclear noun form and reference. In “a probation period where they can judge,” the relative clause is awkwardly attached, and the sentence beginning “Several measures can be taken…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma. Review sentence boundaries, articles, and singular/plural forms, and vary complex structures while keeping each sentence complete.
