IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.

What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Nowadays, having skills is really important for jobs. In this modern era age doesn't matter but experience do. It is true that competition is much higher than we expected, jobs only granted for those who have experience than the freshers. The difficulty is face by the freshers as they have limited knowledge about their skills and still have to improve it, therefore it is harder for them to find any job opportunities easily.

People over the age 50 in some countries hardly get jobs despite their experience but in this modern life, they think about the youth to come forward in the race of technology, gave more opportunities to youth of that country, i think people over the age 50 have a ancient mindset as the technology and country is developing day by day, everyone expects the outcomes according to the modern era

To resolve the issue, they should clearly mentioned their demands, terms and conditions and give them opportunities to prove themselves as they have experience, that why give them a chance to identify their mindset and most crucial thing is to understand eachother point of view as it improves mutual support and interaction, which automatically develops interest in their works. From my perspective, i partially agree to it, as experience and skills are both important things to get job in this case age doesn't matter although experience and skills do matter which ultimately increases the chances of getting job as compared to others, like, freshers even though

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You address both the causes and possible measures, but the response only partially fulfils the task because the main ideas are limited and not clearly explained. You suggest that employers favour younger people because they are more suited to technological change, which is relevant, but the claim that people over 50 have “an ancient mindset” is broad and unsupported. The proposed solution—clarifying demands and giving older applicants opportunities to prove themselves—needs a specific explanation of what employers or governments should do. Your final position is also difficult to identify: “I partially agree to it” does not clearly answer the causes-and-solutions question. Develop a small number of relevant points with examples, and state your position directly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is some paragraphing, and the response moves from a general introduction to the problem and then to possible solutions. However, ideas are not arranged in a clear overall progression: the opening focuses on fresh graduates, although the task concerns older workers, and the discussion then shifts abruptly to technology and youth. Connections between sentences are often unclear, as in “that why give them a chance to identify their mindset,” and the final paragraph combines solutions with a personal conclusion and a comparison to freshers. Linking words such as “therefore” and “although” are attempted, but they do not consistently clarify the relationships between ideas. Give each paragraph one clear purpose and use explicit transitions to connect cause, consequence, and solution.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some vocabulary relevant to employment, including “competition,” “experience,” “opportunities,” and “mutual support,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “jobs only granted,” “ancient mindset,” and “interest in their works.” These expressions sometimes make your intended meaning less precise. Repetition of “experience,” “skills,” and “opportunities” also limits flexibility. Aim for more precise employment-related language and check whether phrases sound natural in context—for example, describe employers’ preference for younger applicants or older workers’ familiarity with established practices rather than using broad labels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including a sentence with “as” and another using “although,” but complex sentences are often faulty and errors can make the message difficult to follow. Examples include “experience do” instead of subject–verb agreement, “The difficulty is face” instead of a correct passive form, and “people over the age 50” without the required preposition. Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need attention: the final thought beginning “like, freshers” is left incomplete, while several long sentences join multiple ideas without clear control. Practise accurate verb forms, articles and prepositions, and divide long sentences into complete units before attempting more complex structures.
