IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.

What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is quite hard for some aged persons, above the age of 50, to find employments in certain countries. Although, they have experience, they are not able to find suitable jobs. The reasons could be their reduced physical activity due to age and also some companies prefer youngsters with modern ideas. This may be reduced either by engaging them in activities which require some muscular activities or by giving them trainings about the modern technologies.

In my perspective, when a person gets into his/her 50s its common that they don't have much stamina or physical ability as young people would have. Hence, aged people need to get themselves involved in such habits. It is healthy both for their mind and bodies as well. Working-out regularly keeps muscles active and a person doesn't feel old before time. For example, my friend's grandfather who is 57 years old is really fit and resilient as compared to my grandfather who is only 49. One day I asked my friend's drandpa what does he do to remain that much fit, he replied, "I regulalry go for morning walks and do yoga in the park with some of my fellows". I was surprised that he is that much consistent, and he also works in a cargo company.

Secondly, older persons can have trainings to learn or adopt new technologies which would really help them get to know about current digital development. Young people are more aware about the digital media, new softwares, AI tools and other digital platforms. By having proper knowledge of these, aged persons can also get jobs in different companies, becase these things really make work a lot convenient.

In conclusion, mental and physical health are the key points in a person's life and how they manage perticular matters. Moreover, to have proper information abbout present day ongoings is quite essential to cope with modern problems. These ideas would really help overcome the hurdles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question by identifying two causes—reduced physical capacity and employers’ preference for younger workers—and proposing exercise and technology training as measures. The example of your friend’s grandfather gives the first measure a personal illustration. However, the causes and solutions are not always closely matched: exercise may support wellbeing, but you do not explain how it would help someone secure a job or address employers’ hiring preferences. The second cause, that companies value “modern ideas,” is also asserted rather than explained, and the proposed training is not developed with a specific workplace example. To strengthen the response, explain the hiring barriers more fully and show how measures such as age-inclusive recruitment or targeted reskilling would address them.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two proposed measures, and a conclusion. Sequencing is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Secondly” and “In conclusion” help readers recognise the progression. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, the first body paragraph focuses heavily on personal fitness, so the link between its example and the employment problem is not always clear. The conclusion also repeats broad points about health and modern information rather than drawing together the causes and solutions. Make each paragraph’s central point explicit and use references that connect the example directly to employability.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss age, employment, health and technology, including phrases such as “physical ability,” “digital development” and “current digital platforms.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “stamina” and “resilient.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “find employments,” “muscular activities,” “have trainings,” and “present day ongoings.” Spelling errors such as “regulalry,” “becase” and “abbout” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your main ideas, but they limit precision and naturalness. Build a bank of common employment collocations and proofread spelling, while choosing vocabulary that directly describes recruitment and workplace skills.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a conditional structure in “when a person gets into his/her 50s” and a relative clause in “who is 57 years old.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the errors rarely obstruct understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. For example, “Although, they have experience” uses punctuation incorrectly after the linking word, while “what does he do” should use statement word order in the reported question (“what he did”). There are also issues with articles and agreement, as in “its common” and “these things really make work a lot convenient.” Aim to check clause structure, verb forms in reported speech, and article use, while continuing to vary sentence patterns.
