IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar charts and line graph below show the results of a survey conducted over a three-year period to discover what people who live in London think of the city.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
What are the best things about living in London?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two bar charts and the graph illustrate the results of a 3-year long study about what citizens of London think about it.
Overall, through out the period, people's favourite thing is the range of shops, with around 40-45% of people. The worst problem in those years was the litter, even though after the second year the people saying that, dropped from almost 80% to approximately 65%.
The best thing about living in London didn't experiance many changes in the given period. As previously mentined, most people liked the range of shops, followed by the job opportunities, which were surpassed by the mixture of people in the second year. The least favourity was the transport in the whole period, with just below 20% in the second year.
The three worst thing in the first year after pollution, were the cost of living, the traffic congestion and the crime, all with almost 60%. The number of people saying the cost of housing slightly increased in the final year. Still, the biggest problem were the three types of pollution- litter, air quality and noise.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The report identifies the main positive feature—shops—and recognises litter as a major concern, while also comparing several categories across the three years. These are relevant selections and the opening overview gives the reader a useful general picture. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: litter was highest in Year 2, not simply a problem that fell after that year, and the claim that transport was the least popular is not supported by the chart, which includes another category at a lower level. The comparison of job opportunities and the mixture of people is also confusing: the latter was higher in Year 2. The final paragraph mentions pollution but does not clearly summarise the separate line-graph trends. More precise, complete coverage of the three visuals would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a general overview, and paragraphs covering positive and negative aspects. Phrases such as “Overall” and “As previously mentioned” help signal the direction of the report, and the reader can follow its broad organisation. However, some links between ideas are unclear or mechanical. For example, “the three worst thing in the first year after pollution” makes the relationship between the categories difficult to understand, while “Still” does not clearly connect the preceding housing detail to the pollution figures. The overview also combines the best and worst features without clearly distinguishing the line graph from the bar charts. Use more precise referencing and organise each paragraph around a clearly identified chart or comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is an adequate range of vocabulary for describing survey results, including “favourite,” “followed by,” “slightly increased,” and “approximately.” The response also attempts more formal reporting language, and its meaning is generally understandable. However, several word choices and spelling errors reduce precision: “study” is less suitable than “survey” here, “favourity” is not the correct form, and “pollution” does not accurately describe litter, air quality and noise as chart categories. “People saying that” is also vague, and “the worst problem” does not clearly distinguish among several concerns. Aim for accurate category labels and natural collocations, and check spelling and word forms before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The report uses a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “even though after the second year…” and the participial phrase “followed by the job opportunities.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “the people saying that, dropped,” the comma separates the subject from its verb; “the three worst thing” needs plural agreement; and “the biggest problem were” has a singular–plural mismatch. The sentence beginning “The three worst thing in the first year after pollution” is also difficult to parse because its grammatical relationships are unclear. Work on agreement, sentence boundaries and punctuation, and make complex comparisons easier to follow.
