Student answer (Band 6.0)

According to the given bar charts and line graph, following are the results shown in them:

The first bar chart outlines that the range of shops, in the last year, is the best thing in London as it has increased to the 50% ratio from past three years. Whereas the ratio was ranging between 40-50% in last two years. The least best thing is the transportation provided there.

Lastly, the line graph demonstrates about the other major problems associated with the lifestyles in London. There is an increase in the litter but it has a slight decrease from the last 3 years. On the other hand, the air quality has been improved by last three years. it has a constant decrease ranging from 75%-60% within last three years. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, but the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you identify key trends, the description of the data is occasionally inaccurate or confusing. For example, stating that 'air quality has been improved' while describing a decrease from 75% to 60% is contradictory, as a decrease in a 'problem' category is an improvement, but the phrasing is unclear. You also fail to provide a clear overview or summary of the trends, which is essential for a Band 7+ score. The report lacks a cohesive summary of the most significant changes across the three-year period, focusing instead on listing individual data points without sufficient synthesis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'The first bar chart', 'The second bar chart', and 'Lastly' are used to transition between sections, which is functional but lacks sophistication. There are also issues with referencing; for instance, in the final paragraph, the connection between 'litter' and the 'slight decrease' is not clearly linked to the data provided. The progression of ideas is present but could be smoother with more varied linking words and better logical flow between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for higher bands. You rely on basic descriptors such as 'best thing', 'worst thing', and 'major problems'. There are also some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'ratio was ranging' (instead of 'percentage ranged') and 'worsen the living' (instead of 'worsen the quality of life'). To improve, you should aim to use more academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'fluctuated', 'declined', and 'significant trend'. The range is sufficient to convey the message, but it does not demonstrate the flexibility needed for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'From past an year' (should be 'Over the past year'), 'noises in London has decreased' (subject-verb agreement error: 'noises' is plural), and 'demonstrates about' (the verb 'demonstrate' does not take 'about'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence construction is often clunky. While you attempt to use complex structures, the errors in tense and preposition usage are noticeable. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct prepositional phrases would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
