IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar charts and line graph below show the results of a survey conducted over a three-year period to discover what people who live in London think of the city.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
What are the best things about living in London?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar chart below reports some information relative to the opinions of people living in London.
As far as the positive aspects concerne, we can notice that the range of shops are the most appreciated things by Londoners with a 45% in the year 1. Job opportunities and mixture of people are appreciated too by the 40% of people living in the city. On the other hand, museums and night life are less appreciated but present a growing trend during the last three years.
The worst things about living in London, instead, are represented by the cost of living and the traffic congestions that are a problem for almost the 60% of the people, with some little improvement in year 2 and year 3. However, ciminality seems to be a minor problem compered to year 1, with a reduction of almost 20% of people feeling it as a problem.
Finally, we can notice that litter remains the major problem during all three years for the 70/75% of population, followed by air quality and noise that, instead, seem to improve during the last three years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying key trends and comparing data points. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary paragraph, which is essential for a Band 7+ score. While the data is generally accurate, the description of the trends could be more analytical. For instance, instead of just listing percentages, you should group the data more effectively to highlight the most significant changes over the three-year period. The report addresses the prompt adequately, but the lack of a distinct overview and some minor inaccuracies in data interpretation (e.g., describing 'litter' as a problem for 70/75% when the chart shows it as the most significant factor) limit the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is organized into three paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is a logical progression from positive aspects to negative ones. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'On the other hand', 'Finally', 'instead'). The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better paragraph transitions. The overall arrangement is coherent, but the cohesion lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to describe the charts, using terms like 'range of shops', 'job opportunities', and 'traffic congestions'. However, there are several word-choice errors and spelling mistakes that detract from the quality, such as 'concerne' instead of 'concerned', 'ciminality' instead of 'criminality', and 'compered' instead of 'compared'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a lack of precision. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and ensure accurate spelling of key terms related to the topic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the range of shops are' should be 'is') and awkward phrasing ('appreciated too by the 40% of people'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor slips throughout. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from being considered error-free. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that prepositions are used correctly in statistical descriptions.
