IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar charts and line graph below show the results of a survey conducted over a three-year period to discover what people who live in London think of the city.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
What are the best things about living in London?
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar chart illustrates the results of a three-year survey on the most positive aspects of living in London across six categories.
Overall, the range of shops remained the highest-rated feature throughout the period, while transport and nightlife were the least popular. Most categories declined slightly in Year 2 before recovering in Year 3, whereas museums and art galleries showed steady growth.
The range of shops received 45% of positive responses in Year 1, fell to 42% in Year 2, and rose to 44% in the final year. Job opportunities and the mixture of people followed a similar pattern, decreasing from 38% to 34% and from 37% to 32%, before recovering to 36% and 35%, respectively.
By contrast, approval of museums and art galleries increased steadily from 18% to almost 25%. Nightlife and transport remained the least favored aspects, with both attracting around 20–25% of positive responses.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The report covers the main features of the data well, providing a clear overview and selecting relevant data points to support the description. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum requirement (147 words), which is a negative factor in task completion. While the trends are accurately identified and the comparison between categories is logical, the slight lack of length prevents a higher score. To improve, ensure you expand slightly on the data points or provide a more detailed concluding summary to comfortably exceed the word count threshold.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is well-organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the general overview to specific category trends. Cohesive devices such as 'By contrast', 'while', and 'whereas' are used effectively to link ideas and contrast different data sets. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. The flow of information is smooth and easy to follow throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. You have used a good range of topic-specific terms such as 'illustrates', 'positive aspects', 'steady growth', and 'favored'. The language is precise enough to convey the trends accurately. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated synonyms or varied ways of describing statistical changes, such as 'fluctuated marginally' or 'experienced a downward trend'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The grammar is generally accurate, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have successfully used subordinate clauses (e.g., 'while transport and nightlife were the least popular') and comparative structures. Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no major errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, demonstrating a solid command of English grammar. To push for a higher score, ensure you continue to vary your sentence structures even further.
