IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar charts and line graph below show the results of a survey conducted over a three-year period to discover what people who live in London think of the city.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

What are the best things about living in London?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The relevant bar and line graphs capture residents of London's views on living in the city across a three-year period.

Both bar charts are used to decipher what are the best and worst things about living in London whilst the line graph is used to determine what is the biggest problem in London.

Firstly, the bar graph depicting the best things about living in London was based on six different things including: selection of shops, employment opportunities, diversity of people, museums and art galleries, night life and finally transport.

Across all three years, the variety of shops was seen as the best thing about living in London. Although this did drop from around 45% in year 1 to around 42% in year 3, it remained the overall highest percentage out of the six options.

In contrast to this, night life and transport were seen as the least best things about living in London.

Over the three-year period, night life increased to over 20% in year 3 whilst transport fluctuated - initially decreasing in year 2 before rising in year 3 to around 20% and lower than night life.

In terms of the worst things about living in London, the cost of living was seen as the highest percentage in the first year out of five options. However, this decreased from almost 60% in Year 1 to around 50% in year 3. Nonetheless, it still remained the worst thing about living in London.

Transport was seen more positively and it was the least worst thing about living in London. In year 1, transport and cost of housing were similar around the 30% mark. However by year 3 transport dropped to under 30% becoming the least worst thing about living in London.

In regards to the line chart, it was used to consider what was the biggest major problem in London between litter, air quality and noise.

Initially litter was seen as the biggest major problem, accounting for around 70% of the selected demogrsaphics and it remained the biggest problem over the three years having peaked in year 2 at almost 80%.

Air quality remained steady over the three years at around 65%.

Similarly, noise remained steady at around 60%, making it the least major of the problems across the three years.

You also have a minor spelling error ('demogrsaphics'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'marginal decline' or 'remained consistent', rather than relying on simpler descriptors.
