What are the best things about living in London?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given column of charts shows the result of survey conducted over a three-year period. There are majorly three charts used comparing different aspects across the three years. Firstly, we have bar chart comparing the best things about living in London. The three bars shows the three year while Y-axis focuses on percentage of people and X-xis focuses on the different areas of interest like range of shops, job opportunities, mixture of people, museums & galleries, night life, transport. From the graph, we can clearly see that most percentage of people finds range of shops to be the best things about living in london meanwhile, fewer people believe that transport is best thing about London.

Moving forward to second graph, this bar graph shows the worst thing about living in london, The three bar here compares year 1, year 2 and year 3. The y-axis focuses on the percentages of the people while x-axis shows the things which people found to be thw worst. From the graph we can see that most people thinks that cost of living is the worst part about living in London and fewer people thinks that transport is the worst thing about living in London.

As we can see we have line graph in the end, This line graph compares the three different aspect like litter, air quality, noise which shows the analysis of the thing which are major problem in london. The y-axis shows the percentange of people and x-axis focuses on year 1, year 2 and year 3. From the graph we can clearly see that litter caused the major problemin year 2.

Overall, this graphs compares the three-year period to discover what people think of the London.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers all three charts provided in the prompt. However, the analysis is superficial and lacks a clear overview or meaningful comparisons. While you identify the 'best' and 'worst' aspects, you fail to highlight significant trends or data points, such as the specific percentages or the changes over the three-year period. The description is largely a list of what is on the axes rather than an analytical report. To improve, you should group information logically and focus on identifying key features and significant differences between the years rather than simply describing the structure of the graphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the progression of ideas is mechanical and repetitive. You rely heavily on phrases like 'Moving forward to second graph' and 'From the graph, we can clearly see', which makes the flow feel unnatural. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often basic or misused, such as the comma splices and run-on sentences that disrupt the logical flow between ideas. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear focus would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic terms like 'things', 'graph', and 'major'. There is little attempt to use precise academic vocabulary to describe data, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'accounted for'. Furthermore, there are several spelling errors (e.g., 'thw', 'problemin') and issues with word choice, such as 'majorly three charts'. To reach a higher band, you need to incorporate a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary and ensure that your word choices are accurate and appropriate for a formal report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'most people thinks', 'three bars shows') and incorrect article usage. Sentence structures are generally simple, and there is a lack of complex sentence forms. Punctuation is also problematic, with several instances of comma splices where two independent clauses are joined incorrectly. While the meaning is generally understandable, the persistent errors in basic grammar and the lack of structural variety limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and using a wider variety of sentence structures would be beneficial.
