What are the best things about living in London?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart and line graph illustrates the opinion of Londoners about their opinion on London from a survey conducted over three years.

Overall, from the opinion from people it is well seen that the best things about living in London is opportunity of shopping. A wide range of shops to choose commodities. the second best thing is job opportunities and mixture of people. on the other hand the worst thing they said is the expense of living and traffic congestion. Also the crime rate is worth of mentioning. Moreover, Opinion on air quality, litter and noise was strong on the first which is declining as a threat in the third year.

Firstly, if we talk about the best things of London according to the people the highest votes go to shopping opportunity. They are satisfied with shopping as well as job opportunities. The next best things are night life and transport just after museum and art galleries. The transport comes in last in the list of best things according to London people who participated in the survey.

Secondly, the worst thing according to London people is their cost of living in London. In all these three years they agree about their cost of accommodation is quite high. if we talk about traffic congestion it is the worst thing in first two years then in the third it declined. the third one is crime rate. The crime was the highest worst thing according to people of London. then it declined according to people. but we see a different picture in the cost of housing. In first two years people were less complaint about the cost of housing than the third one.so the graph in the third year went up. At last if we talk about the transport the first year it was in peak while in the last two years of the survey it came down.

Thirdly, the last survey was about the opinion which is recorded in yes from people about the litter, air quality and noise of London. We can see most London people recognize litter as a major problem than noise and air quality. but after two year it went down after having a peak in the second year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, but the analysis is often inaccurate or confusing. For instance, you state that 'transport comes in last' as a best thing, but the bar chart shows it is quite high. Additionally, the description of the line graph is difficult to follow, as you mention trends that are not clearly supported by the data provided. While you attempt to summarize the information, the lack of precision in reporting the data points and the misinterpretation of the trends prevent a higher score. To improve, ensure you carefully cross-reference your text with the visual data to ensure accuracy.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'at last if we talk about the transport' or 'thirdly, the last survey'. The progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, particularly when moving between the different charts. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult to determine exactly which data point you are referring to. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words will help the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic phrases like 'best things', 'worst thing', and 'people of London'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'opportunity of shopping' instead of 'shopping opportunities' and 'less complaint' instead of 'fewer complaints'. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is not sufficient to demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands. You should focus on using more precise nouns and adjectives to describe trends and survey results.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the response, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The bar chart and line graph illustrates') and incorrect article usage. Sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at complex sentences often contain errors, such as 'if we talk about traffic congestion it is the worst thing in first two years then in the third it declined'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing capital letters at the start of sentences and misuse of commas. These errors occasionally impede the flow of the text.
