Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The candidate attempts to address all three visual components (best things, worst things, and major problems), satisfying the basic requirements of Task 1. However, the data interpretation contains several notable inaccuracies and misreadings of the charts. For instance, the student claims that the best things like a range of shops and job opportunities decreased until year 3, whereas the data shows shops fluctuating (45 to 41.5 to 42.5) and job opportunities remaining steady at 35 in years 2 and 3. Furthermore, the overview is weak, consisting merely of a copied introductory sentence rather than a synthesis of key trends. Ideas are present but under-developed and lack precision. This falls under Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response lacks appropriate paragraphing, with multiple distinct ideas and charts crammed into bulky, unstructured blocks of text. There is no clear overall progression or logical structure guiding the reader from one chart to the next. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, or inaccurate, such as using 'Furthermore, if we see to the worst things' and abrupt transitions like 'while on the other side' and 'on the other hand'. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to follow the relationships between data points. Overall, the organization is inadequate, placing it firmly at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 for some basic sequencing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses a basic and repetitive vocabulary adequate for a minimal description of the charts, but suffers from numerous spelling errors ('overvie', 'experiance', 'Londo', 'dcrease', 'abrupt', 'cngestion', 'gallaries', 'slmost') and awkward word choices ('traffic cngestion increased ib 2 years'). There is little successful attempt at less common lexical items, and word formation issues recur. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic subject matter, the frequency of lexical errors and misspellings restricts the score to Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The text displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple clauses and faulty attempts at complex ones. Punctuation and capitalization are weak (e.g., starting sentences with lowercase letters like 'in year 1' and 'the best things'). Grammatical errors are frequent throughout, including missing articles ('in year also decrease a bit'), incorrect prepositions ('in year 1', 'increased in years'), and subject-verb agreement or tense inconsistencies ('crime was increased and then represented a decline'). These errors frequently cause strain for the reader, aligning the response with Band 5.
