Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

What are the best things about living in London?

What are the best things about living in London?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two bar graphs illustrate the good and bad aspects of living in London. Additionally, the line graph represents the multiple variables considered as major problems in London.

In a cursory glance of the bar graphs, it is evident that variety of shopping facilities in london is considered as one of the most and the transport as the least appealing factors about residing in London over the course of 3 years. Furthermore, the expense of living is voted as the extreme worse and transportation is considered somewhat tolerable across the period of 3 years.

The first bar graph dispplays a steady decline ranging from around 45% of shop options which is the highest percentage of all to almost 35% of museums and art galleries over the three years. The night life and transport show almost identical statistics for all the years. The expense of residing in the first year, traffic congestion in the first two and crime rates in the first year show identical percentage of almost 55% in first year. Addtionally cost of housing in the year 1 and year 2 and transport in the first year display same percentage of almost 35%.

The line graph indicate litter as a substantial problem in london with the highest percentage of 70% in year 1, with slight increase to 75% in year 2 and with the steady decline to almost 65% in year 3. Both air quality and noise pollution display a consistent dip from almost 65% and 59% in year 1 to eventually 64% and 55% in year 3.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student covers all parts of the visual data by describing the two bar charts and the line graph, providing an overview of the main trends. However, the selection of data is sometimes inaccurate or confusingly phrased. For instance, the statement that museums and art galleries showed a decline 'ranging from around 45% of shop options... to almost 35%' misinterprets the data points. Additionally, some comparisons are vague ('almost 55% in first year'). While an overview is attempted, the lack of precision in reporting key figures keeps this response at Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The report has a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to group information by chart. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction from the body details. However, the logical progression is occasionally hindered by clunky transitions, such as 'In a cursory glance of the bar graphs', and awkward mechanical linking. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it hard to follow which year or category certain percentages apply to. Cohesive devices are present but used rather repetitively or awkwardly, placing this firmly in the Band 6.0 category.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'cursory glance', 'traffic congestion', and 'noise pollution'. However, there are numerous word choice errors and unnatural collocations, such as 'extreme worse' instead of 'worst aspect', 'shop options' instead of 'range of shops', and spelling/typographical errors like 'dispplays' and 'Addtionally'. These inaccuracies do not entirely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

A mix of simple and complex sentence structures is attempted, such as in the opening sentences. However, frequent grammatical errors occur throughout the response, including missing articles ('in london', 'over course of 3 years'), incorrect preposition usage ('statictics for all the years'), and awkward subject-verb agreement or tense inconsistencies ('The line graph indicate'). While these errors rarely completely obscure the meaning, their frequency prevents the writer from achieving a Band 6.0, justifying a score of 5.5.
