Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the three charts provided in the prompt, identifying categories such as best things, worst things, and major problems. However, the information is presented in a very fragmented and superficial way, with inaccuracies in data reporting (for instance, claiming that the average of noise pollution, air quality, and litter was 60%). While the candidate provides a basic overview and attempts to touch upon main features, the lack of precise data points and underdeveloped description prevent the response from achieving a higher band. To improve, the student must select key trends and quote data more accurately rather than listing isolated figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, which shows an awareness of structural organization. However, the logical progression is weak, and the second body paragraph jumps abruptly between different categories without a clear underlying structure. Cohesive devices are used mechanically (e.g., 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', 'In addition'), and referencing is occasionally imprecise. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs often fails to maintain a smooth flow of ideas. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to group related data logically and ensure transitions between sentences and paragraphs feel more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, relying heavily on terms directly copied or slightly adapted from the prompt, such as 'range of shops', 'job opportunities', and 'cost of living'. There are also spelling and word-form errors, including 'chatrs', 'gallaries', 'wrost', and 'congestio'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general topic, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to urban issues, but these attempts are marred by inaccurate spelling and word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple and flawed complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as missing articles ('the london', 'city'), incorrect prepositions ('explore about the individuals'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('the worst things was'). Punctuation is generally basic, and capitalization errors occur (e.g., lowercase 'london'). These frequent errors can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student should practice forming complex sentences accurately and proofread their work for basic grammatical concord.
