Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by mentioning various categories from the charts, such as the range of shops and the cost of living. However, the response falls short in several areas. Firstly, the student misinterprets the timeframe, stating the survey was taken 'over a decade of three-year', which indicates a misunderstanding of the data. Furthermore, the selection of data is erratic and lacks a clear overview of the main trends across all charts. While some figures are provided (e.g., 45% for shops, 58% for living cost), key information from the third chart regarding major problems like litter and air quality is entirely omitted. The response is also cut short abruptly in the fourth paragraph, leaving the description incomplete. Therefore, the task is addressed only partially, aligning with Band 5 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays some basic organizational structure, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, overall progression is lacking, and paragraphing is underdeveloped, with the final paragraph consisting of a single incomplete sentence. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'In contrast with discomforts of people faces living cost' and 'In addition with the job opportunities'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the mechanical transitions fail to guide the reader smoothly through the comparison of the charts. This level of organization and cohesion corresponds to Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses a limited range of vocabulary, with frequent errors in word choice and collocation. Examples include 'discomforts of people faces living cost', 'range of shops were high in number', and 'mixture of people were also a plus point'. Words are often incorrectly formed or used in unidiomatic structures, such as 'crime ratio' instead of crime rates, and 'living cost' instead of the cost of living. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic topics from the prompt, the persistent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('range of shops were', 'mixture of people were'), incorrect prepositions ('of people faces'), and awkward phrasing ('living cost which was so higher of 58%'). Punctuation is also problematic, particularly with capitalization in the middle of sentences ('Overall, In the first year'). These frequent errors can cause strain for the reader, fitting the Band 5 descriptor where attempts at complex structures are often faulty.
