What are the best things about living in London?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Both bar and line graph charts illustrates the outcome of a survey about what individuals think about living in london over a three year period.

Overall, it is evident that the range of shops were a positive thing whereas the cost of living was considered a negative thing in London. Furthermore, the transport shares the lowest percentage in terms of good and bad things about living in London. Notably, litter, air quality and noise saw a gradual decline over the three year time period.

On the one hand, the range of shops dominated the bar chart by scoring the highest figure as compared to other things. Moreover, museums, art galleries and night life saw a gradual increase as the best thing over the specified time period. Ultimately, the transport was considered as the least best thing.

On the other hand, the cost of living accounted for the highest proportion in terms of worst thing about living in london. Traffic congestion and crime first year percentage shares almost similar figures. In addition, the transport was the least worst thing about living in London. Subsequently, litter, air quality and noise saw a gradual downtrend over the three year time period where litter saw a sudden increase in second year.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on the best things, the worst things, and the trends regarding problems in London over the three-year period. An overview is successfully provided in the second paragraph, highlighting key extremes such as the range of shops and the cost of living. However, some parts of the task are developed more fully than others; for instance, the line graph detailing litter, air quality, and noise is mentioned rather briefly in the final sentences without deep elaboration of specific data points. Overall, the selection of main features is relevant, but further extension of the data trends would elevate the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The report displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the overview, followed by separate body paragraphs for the positive and negative aspects. Paragraphing is utilised appropriately to divide different charts and themes. Nevertheless, cohesion at times feels a little mechanical or faulty, such as the repetitive use of transition markers like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' to structure paragraphs, and referencing occasionally lacks precision when grouping multiple data categories together without clear signposting.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is employed for the task, successfully conveying general trends and statistical relationships through terms such as 'proportion', 'gradual increase', and 'downtrend'. There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is occasionally accompanied by slight inaccuracies in word choice or phrasing, such as 'least best thing' and 'least worst thing', which sound unnatural. Spelling is generally acceptable, and minor lexical slips do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the descriptions with ease.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with accurate usage of basic structures. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as subject-verb agreement issues in 'Both bar and line graph charts illustrates' and missing capitalization in proper nouns like 'london'. Prepositional and article errors also occur occasionally. However, these grammatical lapses rarely impede communication, and the majority of sentences remain clear, fulfilling the expectations for a moderate level of structural control.
