Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially. While it attempts to describe the charts regarding the best things about living in London, the overview provided in the second paragraph is unclear and confused, stating that the best things 'remain declined over a three years ago periods starting from 45% ang ends with 25%', which does not accurately summarise the main trends shown in the visual data. The details provided in the body paragraph contain inaccuracies and confusion when reporting specific figures, such as stating job opportunities started at 37% and remained unchanged when the chart shows fluctuations and different values. To improve toward a higher band, the writer needs to present a clearer, more accurate overview of the main trends without getting bogged down in minor, inaccurate data points, and ensure that the figures cited genuinely reflect the visual information provided.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation in the response, but it lacks clear overall progression. The essay begins with an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph, but the logical sequencing of ideas breaks down due to confusing transitions and poor integration of data. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often inaccurate or mechanically applied, such as the abrupt shifts using 'Initially', 'Then', 'After that', and 'While on the other hand'. Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow which chart feature is being discussed. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information lacks internal cohesion. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure a more logical flow of information, connect ideas more smoothly, and establish a clear progression from the introduction through the overview to the detailed body paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The vocabulary is repetitive, relying on basic terms such as 'increased', 'decreased', and 'peaked'. There are noticeable lexical errors, including word choice and word formation issues such as 'three years period', 'remain declined', 'range of shop', and 'remain unchange', which stem from inaccurate word forms. Spelling and phrasing mistakes are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader. To move up to a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider range of vocabulary suitable for describing statistical data, such as nouns and verbs indicating trends ('growth', 'drop', 'fluctuate'), and pay closer attention to correct word forms and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with article usage, pluralisation, verb tenses, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'London's people about city', 'art galleries and museums by 5% in last year', and 'both things was located'. Punctuation errors, such as missing spaces before commas and periods, are also noticeable. These frequent errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should focus on mastering basic sentence structures, ensuring correct subject-verb agreement, and reducing grammatical slips by reviewing tense consistency when describing past survey data.
