What are the best things about living in London?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar charts and line graph compares the results of a survey conducted over a three-year period to discover what people who live in London think about the city.

Overall, the graph shows a downward trend for both best and the worst aspects about living from first to third year in percentage. Both bars have been constantly falling even if its a range of shops or crime.

In the first year , except museum and art galleries, all best things like variety of shops, job oppurtunities, night life and availability of transport is declined slightly to 5 percent each.

Similarly in the difficulties of staying london such a cost of living, traffic, crime and transport much downward trend has been noticed over the three years. Except codt of housing which has had a little bit of groeth over the third year.

The line graph illustrated the major issues in london are litter, airquality and noise , which decreased to 5 percent each over the three years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the survey’s three-year scope and mention all three chart topics, but the report only minimally addresses the data. The overview that “both bars have been constantly falling” is inaccurate: several best features rise or fluctuate, while worst aspects do not all decline (for example, housing costs increase slightly and traffic is unchanged before falling). The claim that selected categories declined “to 5 percent each” confuses percentage-point changes with final values; litter, air quality and noise also fall by different amounts, not five points each. Important comparisons and accurate figures are largely missing. The response is also 3 words below the 150-word minimum; the 20 words copied from the prompt are excluded from the count. To improve, give a precise overview and support it with a few correct comparisons across the years.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable report structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the positive features, drawbacks and major problems. This helps the reader identify the chart being discussed. However, progression within the paragraphs is limited, and the repeated pattern of saying that categories declined does not organise the data into clear comparisons. “Similarly” signals a relationship, but the following paragraph does not explain which trends are similar or different. The overview also makes a broad claim that is not supported by the details. Group categories by their actual patterns—for example, those that rose, fell or fluctuated—and use clear links such as “by contrast” where trends differ.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “downward trend,” “survey,” “percentage” and “major issues,” so the topic is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or awkward, such as “best things,” “difficulties of staying London” and “declined slightly to 5 percent each.” The last phrase also makes the data difficult to interpret because it does not distinguish a change from a final percentage. There are noticeable spelling errors, including “oppurtunities,” “codt,” “groeth” and “airquality.” Use accurate category names and verbs such as “rose,” “fell” and “remained stable,” and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would make comparisons easier to follow.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a few longer structures, including “even if” and “Except … which,” but the range is limited and complex attempts are often faulty. In the opening, the plural subject “charts and line graph” requires “compare,” not “compares.” The overview contains an incomplete construction in “both best and the worst aspects about living,” and “from first to third year” needs clearer article and number forms. In “all best things … is declined,” the subject and verb do not agree, and the passive form is not appropriate for describing a trend. Punctuation and spacing are also inconsistent, as in “year ,” and “noise ,”. Practise accurate simple comparisons first, then build longer sentences while checking agreement, articles and verb forms.
