What are the best things about living in London?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given two bar graph and one line graph reflects compare and the results of a survey conducted over a three-year period to discover what people who live in London think of the city.

Overall, the range of shops was one of the most popular features, whereas the cost of living was a major disadvantage. The line graph also shows that concerns about the three problems generally decreases towards the end of period.

Looking at the positive aspects, the range of shops was the most popular feature in the first year, at about 45%. Job opportunities and the mixture of people were also popular, at around 35%. Museums and art galleries became more popular in the final year. However, nightlife and transport received lower percentages.

Regarding the negative aspects, the cost of living and traffic congestion were major concerns. Crime was also a problem for many people, although its figure decreased over the period. Housing costs remained relatively stable, while dissatisfaction with transport fell. The line graph shows that noise was less of a problem than the other two issuess.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main positive feature and a key disadvantage, and you include relevant comparisons across the three charts. However, coverage is uneven and several important trends are only broadly described. For example, you say the cost of living and traffic were major concerns, but do not show that cost of living fell markedly after Year 1 while traffic remained high before declining in Year 3. The statement that crime decreased is accurate, but its substantial fall from Year 1 is not quantified. The overview also says concerns generally decreased, yet litter rose before falling and the charts show different patterns. Include a few approximate figures and make the overview more precise to develop the key features fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The report has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for positive and negative aspects. This makes the information easy to follow, and transitions such as “Looking at the positive aspects” and “Regarding the negative aspects” signal the shift between charts. The progression is generally coherent, though the final paragraph moves from the bar-chart categories to the line graph without a clear transition or enough detail about its trends. Some linking is also formulaic, with repeated “was” and “also” constructions. Grouping the line-graph findings in a distinct sentence or paragraph and using clearer comparisons between years would make the connections more natural and precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “popular features,” “major concerns,” “relatively stable,” and “decreased over the period.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some phrasing, such as “dissatisfaction with transport fell,” shows an attempt to vary expression. However, a few word choices and collocations are imprecise: “reflects compare” does not express the task clearly, and “the three problems” is vague when referring to litter, air quality, and noise. There is also a spelling error in “issuess.” To strengthen the report, use standard chart-reporting phrases such as “compares the results” and name categories directly, while checking spelling and choosing precise terms for trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause in “although its figure decreased over the period” and a comparison introduced by “whereas.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. The opening sentence has an unclear structure (“reflects compare and the results”), and “concerns … decreases” has a subject–verb agreement error; the plural subject requires “decrease.” In the overview, “towards the end of period” is missing an article, and the comma in “popular features, whereas” needs a following space. These errors do not prevent understanding, but careful editing of sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation would improve accuracy.
