IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar charts and line graph below show the results of a survey conducted over a three-year period to discover what people who live in London think of the city.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
What are the best things about living in London?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The following graphs capture what people, living in London, think of different things in the city over a three-year period. Overall three charts are being displayed, out of which two are vertical bar charts and one line chart.
The bar chart illustrates the best things about living in London. In the first year, things like variety of shops, job opportunities and mixture of people were considered the best things about living in London by more than 30% people. Other things like transport, night life, museums and art galleries were also considered best things, but by only half the people who were interviewd agreed to it. Later on in the upcoming two years, more people started considering museums and art gallaries as the best things about living in London along the other top three. Almost same amount of opinions were given on night life and transport.
In the second bar chart, we can observe the worst things about living in London. More than 50% of people interviewed believed that cost of living, traffic congestion and crime are the top three worst things followed by the cost of housing and transport. But in the year 2 and 3, the numbers went down to 50% or less people agreeing on it. One more thing to notice is that the crime rate must have decreased sharply because only 40% people agreed on that in the year 2 and 3.
The line chart compares the major problems in london. In the first year, Litter was the major concern and it only grew further with more people agreeing to it in the second year. But then there was a steady drop in it in the third year. However, although there was a decrease in the agreement of people with air quality and noise as major problems it still was almost the same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover all three visuals and identify several important patterns, including the leading positive features, the main drawbacks, and litter’s rise and subsequent fall. The report is generally relevant, but some comparisons are unclear or inaccurate. For example, saying that the first three positive features were supported by “more than 30%” is broadly correct, but describing the other features as chosen by “only half the people” is misleading: their figures are around 22–29%, not half of respondents. The claim that litter “grew further” in Year 2 is also inaccurate, since it rose from about 70% to 75%, while the later decline is correctly noted. The overview could more clearly summarise the main contrasts across the charts, and the air-quality and noise trends need more precise description.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction followed by a paragraph for each chart, with information generally presented in a sensible order. Phrases such as “In the second bar chart” and “The line chart compares” help readers follow the report, and the final paragraph contrasts the trends in litter with those for air quality and noise. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the stronger progression associated with the next level. However, the opening spends space describing chart types rather than giving an overview of the key findings, and some links between ideas are mechanical. For example, “One more thing to notice” is conversational, while “However, although” creates an awkward transition. Use a concise overview and more precise links between comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic vocabulary to describe the visuals, including “job opportunities,” “traffic congestion,” “major concern,” and “steady drop.” However, the range and precision are uneven, and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for a formal report. “Only half the people” misrepresents the figures, while “the crime rate must have decreased” confuses survey responses about crime as a drawback with the actual crime rate. Phrases such as “top three worst things” and “opinions were given” are also awkward, and spelling errors in “interviewd” and “gallaries” reduce accuracy. Aim for precise reporting language, such as “respondents,” “proportion,” and “was regarded as,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, and most of the meaning remains clear. For instance, the sentence beginning “But then there was a steady drop” communicates the change in litter, while the contrast introduced by “although” shows an attempt at subordination. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In “more than 30% people,” the noun phrase needs “of”; “only 40% people” has the same issue. The sentence “although there was a decrease … it still was almost the same” has an unclear reference and awkward structure. There are also missing spaces after commas, as in “people, living” and “transport, night life.” Use consistent sentence punctuation and check articles, prepositions, and the grammatical links between clauses.
