Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the survey’s three themes and give a relevant overview, noting that shops and job opportunities are positives and litter is a major problem. However, the report only partially covers the data and several comparisons are inaccurate or unclear. For example, job opportunities were not consistently at 40%, and night life and transport were not both supported by 25% in every year. The statement that cost of living and congestion “decreased … to 48%” combines categories: congestion was about 49% in Year 3, while cost of living was about 50%. The final point about litter and air quality is unfinished, and the line graph’s trends are not properly described. Select key figures accurately and compare changes across all three years.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic structure, moving from an introduction and overview to positive and negative features, and phrases such as “Overall” and “On the other hand” help signal the sections. However, progression is uneven: the first paragraph repeats the chart descriptions in question form, while the final paragraph stops before completing its point. Several ideas are crowded together, as in the sentence about shops, jobs, mixture of people, museums, nightlife and transport, making comparisons difficult to follow. Use separate paragraphs for the overview, positive features, negative features and major problems, and connect each comparison clearly. More precise referencing would also help readers distinguish the three years and the different chart categories.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “range of shops,” “job opportunities,” “cost of living” and “air quality,” so the main subject is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the report difficult to understand. Examples include “disappointed from,” “the most worst thing,” and “supported” for the proportion of respondents who selected an option. There are also noticeable spelling errors such as “disapointted,” “conjustions,” “museams” and “servey.” Use neutral reporting language and check spelling carefully; for example, say that a feature “was cited by” a percentage of respondents rather than that people “supported” it.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts some longer sentences and uses basic linking structures, but grammatical control is inconsistent and errors frequently interrupt the reading. In the opening, “The bar charts and line graph illustrates” has subject–verb disagreement, and the questions embedded in the description are not formed as report sentences. Other examples include “what are the best things,” “the worst thing living in London,” and “the major problems was litter,” which show problems with sentence structure, articles, number and agreement. Punctuation is also weak: several sentences run together, and the final sentence is incomplete. Practise writing complete declarative sentences, checking singular and plural subjects, and using full stops to separate each comparison.
