IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar charts and line graph below show the results of a survey conducted over a three-year period to discover what people who live in London think of the city.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
What are the best things about living in London?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In the given charts we can see a clear picture of what residents of London thinks about the city. The survey conducted over a period of 3 three years and discovered some cruicial information about the life of people in London. Firstly we must notice is that the 3rd bar in the first bar chart is dominating in all the sections. So there must be some improvements in transportations, night life etc. Most of the poeple think there are a very wide range of shops in the city. We can notice that the job oppertunities decreased in last 2 years. Transportation system has a up down curve but now it is back to it's previous position.
If we talk about the worst things about living in London then the cost of living and traffic comes to the top of the list. So many people also voted for the crimes but the current situation is maybe better that's why people voted very less to crime compare to the first year. Throughout the years the cost of housing remains the same and most the people still complains about this. More than 50% people thinks litter, air quality and noise are the major problems in london. The government must look into it when more than half of it's population complaining about something. Even in the second year more than 70% people voted yes for the litter to be the major problem in London.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response identifies several relevant categories, including shops, jobs, cost of living, traffic, crime, litter, air quality and noise, but it does not give a clear, accurate overview of the main patterns across the charts. The claim that “the 3rd bar in the first bar chart is dominating in all the sections” is unclear and does not match the data: the range of shops is the leading positive feature, while the third bar is not consistently highest. Some trends are also misreported: job opportunities fall from Year 1 to Year 2 but then remain stable, and housing costs do not simply “remain the same.” The report adds unsupported explanations and advice, such as suggesting crime improved and urging government action. Focus on summarising the strongest comparisons and changes objectively.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic overall structure, moving from positive features to negative aspects and then to the problems chart. Paragraphing helps distinguish these topics, and signposts such as “Firstly” and “If we talk about” make the broad direction understandable. However, progression within paragraphs is uneven: the first paragraph jumps from an unclear statement about the third bar to shops, jobs and transport without a clear comparison or organising principle. Some references, including “it” in “back to it's previous position,” are not precise. The repeated use of “So” and “We can notice” also makes linking feel mechanical. Group the most important trends together and use clearer references and comparisons to guide the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some task-related vocabulary, such as “range of shops,” “job opportunities,” “cost of living” and “traffic,” so the main subject is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or informal for an academic report. “The 3rd bar … is dominating” is vague, while “up down curve” does not describe the transport figures precisely. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “cruicial,” “poeple,” “oppertunities” and “london,” which reduce the overall accuracy of the vocabulary. Avoid conversational phrases such as “If we talk about” and choose precise terms for ranking and change, such as “highest,” “declined” or “remained stable.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a few longer sentences and uses basic present and past forms, but sentence structures are mostly simple, and errors occur frequently enough to affect fluency. Examples include “what residents of London thinks,” where the verb does not agree with the plural subject, and “The survey conducted,” which is missing an auxiliary verb. In “most the people still complains,” both the article pattern and subject–verb agreement are faulty; “more than 50% people thinks” also needs a grammatical construction such as “more than 50% of people think.” Apostrophe use is inaccurate in “it's previous position” and “it's population.” Work on agreement, articles, auxiliaries and sentence boundaries, while practising accurate complex sentences for comparisons.
