Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response makes a limited attempt to discuss the chart topics, mentioning shops, people, galleries, nightlife, transport, jobs and crime. However, it does not provide a clear report of the survey results: there is no overview of the main patterns, and almost no accurate numerical comparisons. Some interpretations are unsupported or incorrect. For example, the response calls job opportunities the best feature, although the range of shops has the highest positive rating in all three years; it also claims crime is the worst issue, while cost of living, traffic and crime are all high, with traffic leading in Year 2 and cost of living in Year 3. The claims about unemployment and residents committing crimes are not shown by the charts. Focus on describing the reported opinions and selecting key comparisons rather than adding explanations not in the data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5

There is some progression through different chart categories, and repeated references to London help indicate the general subject. However, the response is presented as one continuous sequence rather than a clearly organised report, so the reader cannot easily distinguish an overview from supporting details. Connections between ideas are often weak: the shift from transport to job opportunities and then to crime is abrupt, while repeated phrases such as “the best thing about London” do not create a clear structure. Group the information into paragraphs—for example, positive features, negative features and the problem ratings—and use comparisons such as “by contrast” or “over the three years” to show how the figures relate.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses a basic range of topic vocabulary, including “mixture of people,” “museums and art galleries,” “night life,” “transport” and “crime,” so the main subjects can generally be recognised. However, word choice and spelling are often inaccurate or imprecise, as in “range of the shop,” “not ver efficient,” “diffrent crimes” and “job opportunity.” Some expressions also do not suit a data report: “very poor” and “not good” express an unsupported judgement rather than describing a percentage or trend. Use precise chart language and accurate collocations, such as “the proportion citing job opportunities” or “the rating increased.” Proofreading spelling and choosing neutral terms would make the meaning clearer and more appropriate to the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both simple statements and longer sentences, including a contrast with “but” and a reason introduced by “because.” However, control of sentence structure and verb forms is inconsistent. Examples include “when time pass these things increases,” “the third year will be improve” and “most of the people was unemployed”; these contain errors in tense, agreement or verb construction. Articles and sentence boundaries are also unreliable, as in “in london, mixture of people” and the run-on sequence beginning “It is not a good thing…”. These errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Practise describing past survey data with consistent past-tense forms, and check subject–verb agreement, articles and punctuation when editing.
