Student answer (Band 4.5)

The bar chart gives a clear picture of a survey conducted over a period of three years to findout the way people think of the city, London. It clearly gives a true sight of the views of best and worst things considered by the citizens. People provided answers if they considered them a major problem by saying "Yes", which is shown in the form of diffrent lines.

Regarding the best things, range of shops and job opportunities are ranked high, at arounf 35% to 45%. across the three yeras. Whereas, Museums and art galleries have experienced an upward trend by the third year.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the survey’s subject and makes a relevant comparison, noting that shops and job opportunities were among the leading positive features and that museums and galleries rose by Year 3. However, it addresses only a small part of the task: the paragraph on the worst aspects is left unfinished, and the chart about litter, air quality and noise is not described. The overview is also vague, and the claim that shops and jobs were both “ranked high” at around 35%–45% does not distinguish their different levels or changes. The response is 43 words below the required minimum, which contributes to its limited coverage. To improve, complete the report and select key comparisons across all three charts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the report: an introduction is followed by a paragraph on positive features and a transition to negative ones. Linking phrases such as “Regarding” and “Considering” help signal the topic. However, progression is very limited because the final paragraph stops after its opening phrase, “Considering the worst things,” and the report does not move through the full set of information. The opening also spends space on general description rather than establishing a concise overview. Develop a clear sequence—introduction and overview, then grouped comparisons—and ensure each paragraph is complete. Use linking expressions to show contrasts and trends, rather than relying mainly on topic labels.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some relevant vocabulary for describing survey data, including “ranked high,” “upward trend,” and “major problem.” These choices show an attempt to use task-appropriate language. However, the range is limited, and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “findout the way people think of the city,” “a true sight of the views,” and “ranked high.” Spelling errors, including “diffrent,” “arounf,” and “yeras,” are noticeable and reduce clarity. Aim for precise chart-report collocations such as “the survey examined residents’ views,” “the proportion rose,” and “the most frequently cited advantage.” Check spelling carefully and avoid adding evaluative wording such as “true” when simply reporting data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes some controlled simple sentences, for example, “It clearly gives a true sight of the views of best and worst things considered by the citizens.” It also attempts a more complex contrast with “Whereas,” but this is a sentence fragment because it has no independent main clause. The opening sentence contains an awkward infinitive construction (“to findout the way people think”), and the phrase “at arounf 35% to 45%. across the three yeras” has incorrect sentence punctuation and an incomplete sentence boundary. These errors make the limited text less fluent, although the general meaning is usually recoverable. Practise complete clauses, accurate punctuation, and varied but controlled sentence patterns when comparing figures.
