IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar charts and line graph below show the results of a survey conducted over a three-year period to discover what people who live in London think of the city.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
What are the best things about living in London?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The bar charts compare the advantages and the disadvantages of living in thr London through the report of three-year survey. The multi-line graph describes the personal opinions of the residents about the major problems in London.
Overall, it is evident that range of shops accounted for highest proportion in the three years and transport reported for lowest percentage in the graphs. Meanwhile, air quailty and noise steadily dragged.
In terms of best things, slight fluctautions were recorded in the range of shops, accounted for 45% in first year, 42% in second year and 43% in the third year. In contrast, job opportunities were reported same in 2nd and 3rd year and mxture of people in first two years. They were 37% in first year and 35 in next two years and 36% in first two years and 34% in third year.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies the charts’ broad subject and gives a limited overview, noting that shops were a leading advantage and referring to changes in air quality and noise. However, it covers only part of the task: it gives a few figures for the advantages, then omits the remaining positive categories, the disadvantages chart, and almost all of the line graph. The overview is also inaccurate: transport was not the lowest category in the bar charts overall, and air quality and noise did not both decline steadily across all three years. The report contains 141 words, below the required 150. To address the task more fully, include a concise overview of the main patterns across all three visuals and select representative comparisons from each.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph about the positive features. Basic linking expressions such as “Overall” and “In contrast” help signal the purpose of sections. However, the report stops before developing the other charts, so its progression is incomplete. Within the final paragraph, several figures and categories are compressed into one long sentence, making the comparisons harder to follow; for example, the job-opportunity and mixture-of-people figures are joined together without clear separation. Organise the body into distinct paragraphs for advantages, disadvantages, and major problems, and use one comparison at a time. This would make the information easier to track and give the report a more complete logical sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses some appropriate chart-report vocabulary, including “proportion,” “fluctuations,” and “accounted for,” and the topic is generally understandable. However, word choice and spelling are inconsistent: “thr,” “quailty,” “fluctautions,” and “mxture” are errors, while “dragged” is an unsuitable informal choice for describing a downward trend. Phrases such as “through the report of three-year survey” and “transport reported for lowest percentage” are also unnatural and reduce precision. Use standard collocations such as “the survey was conducted over three years,” “transport had the lowest figure,” and “declined.” Proofreading spelling and choosing more precise trend language would make the vocabulary more reliable and appropriate for an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is some variety in sentence forms, including the introductory clauses “Overall, it is evident that…” and “In terms of best things…”. The main ideas can usually be understood, but grammatical control is uneven. For example, “through the report of three-year survey” is an incomplete or poorly formed construction, and “range of shops accounted for highest proportion” is missing articles. In “job opportunities were reported same,” the sentence lacks the grammatical structure needed to express the comparison clearly. The final sentence also combines several comparisons in a way that makes the relationships difficult to parse. Practise accurate article use and complete comparison structures, and divide long sentences so that each one expresses a clear relationship between categories and years.
