What are the best things about living in London?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph and the bar graph illustrates information of a survey conducted in London about the best and worst things about living.

Overall, it is clearly evident that the line graph present major problem in london, however most of the people are happy about the range of shops and said for the numebr of crimes and traffic congestion.

The range of shops in London is the best thing about 50% in first year then 43% in second year and 45% in last year people voted for it. Moreover, the second best thing is mixture of people, which 37% in first two years then decreased by 2%. But a opposite trend for museums or art galleries was observed as only 30% in year 1 then increased to 35% and at last 37%.

The second bar graph gives information about the worst things the top position was hold by three things in year 1 by the cost of living, traffic congestion and the crime, however in year 2 crime percentage decreased to 40% and 10% by living of cost, but the percentage of traffic congestion remained same. The least percentage in graph is 28% followed by the transport in year 2 and 3.

The last and most important graph is about the major problems in London and answered as yes by the people are litter around 70% in year 1 then increased by 10% in year 2, but went down in year 3 by 12%. Moreover, airquality and noice remained constant in three years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You cover all three visuals and identify several relevant features, including shops as a leading positive, the high figures for litter, and changes in crime and congestion. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: the line graph does not show that people are generally happy, and the claim that people “said for the number of crimes and traffic congestion” does not explain the overall results. Several figures or trends are misreported. For example, shops are about 45%, 42%, and 43%, rather than 50%, 43%, and 45%; litter rises from 70% to 75% before falling to 65%, not by 10% and then 12%. Air quality and noise also decline rather than remain constant. Select the main patterns accurately and support them with reliable comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the positive features, negative features, and major problems. This helps the reader follow the three visuals. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow, particularly in the overview and the paragraph about the worst aspects, where several points are joined without clear relationships. Linking phrases such as “Moreover” and “however” are used, but some do not accurately signal the contrast or addition intended. The final paragraph also combines litter, air quality, and noise without clearly comparing their different trends. Use topic sentences and organise each paragraph around a clear comparison, with references such as “by contrast” or “while” used precisely.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “percentage,” “decreased,” “increased,” and “remained,” and you attempt to describe comparisons across years. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive, which makes some statements hard to interpret. For example, “the top position was hold by three things” and “10% by living of cost” do not express the intended comparisons naturally. There are also spelling errors such as “numebr,” “airquality,” and “noice.” Build a more precise range of chart language, including “accounted for,” “ranked highest,” “fell by,” and “remained stable,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “which,” “however,” and “as,” but complex structures are often faulty and errors occur frequently. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “The line graph and the bar graph illustrates” and “the line graph present.” Other problems include missing or misplaced articles and prepositions, as in “the best thing about 50%,” and unclear sentence construction in “the worst things the top position was hold by three things.” Verb forms also need attention: “was hold” should be “was held,” while the description of chart data should generally use consistent present-tense reporting. Practise writing shorter, complete sentences first, then combine them accurately using subordinate clauses.
