IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Now a days in various nations, the amount of pupils continuing their studies after school has raised. Furthermore, the number of courses has also increased at universities and colleges. In my opinion, students should continue their education even after school because today the importance of higher education is significantly increased along with tough competition in jobs.

Firstly, I strongly agree that to continuing education after completing school studies is very essential in today’s life. The reason is the increase in the demand of various jobs which we clear only by getting high quality education in the universities and colleges. Now we can also take benefit of the availability of different kinds of courses and programs in the educational institutes. I personally believe that; the more we study, the more we succeed. Let me take an example of myself, after completing my school education, I took admission in a public college for medical studies. After completing my course in college, now I’m working as a nurse in a government hospital.

Secondly, I want to talk about the difficulties we are facing in our way to get higher education. In some cases we saw that some students argue that their parents are not giving permission to take admission in higher educational institutions. Moreover, in some countries the citizens want to get only school education instead of studying in universities and colleges. They didn’t want to do job so they open their own businesses after studying basic education. For instance, if a person want to open his own business in future, he didn’t want higher studies or courses to open a business. So he didn’t study after school. To study courses in colleges and universities is meaningless for him.

In conclusion, I agree that we should take benefit of various programs and courses if we want to do a job in future but if we just want to do business we shouldn’t want to study further.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear overall view: further education is valuable for people seeking employment, while it may not be necessary for everyone who plans to run a business. The personal example of becoming a nurse supports the employment argument. However, the response only partly evaluates whether the overall increase in further study and course choice is positive or negative. The second body paragraph shifts to parental permission and business plans, but these points are not developed enough to show why the trend itself is beneficial or harmful. The conclusion also makes the position conditional rather than clearly weighing the development as a whole. To strengthen the response, explain the wider effects of expanded access and course choice, and develop each main reason with a clear explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the response, and the nursing example is placed alongside the point it supports. However, progression between ideas is sometimes unclear: the second paragraph moves from parental permission to citizens choosing basic education and then to business ownership without showing how these points connect. Some linking is mechanical, and repeated references to “higher education” and “courses” do not always clarify the relationship between claims. The conclusion introduces a job-versus-business distinction that could have been established more clearly earlier. Group related ideas, use clearer references, and make each paragraph develop one central point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “higher education,” “educational institutions,” “medical studies,” and “government hospital.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural, which sometimes makes the reader pause. For example, “the amount of pupils” is not the natural expression for people, and “the demand of various jobs” does not clearly express the intended idea. “Take admission” and “open their own businesses” also show limited control of common academic collocations. There are also spelling and form issues such as “Now a days.” Build a bank of accurate phrases for education, employment and access, and check whether nouns and verbs combine naturally before using them.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional example beginning “if a person…” and the comparison “the more we study, the more we succeed.” These structures help express relationships between ideas, but control is inconsistent. Errors include “to continuing education,” “the increase in the demand … which we clear,” and “if a person want,” where verb forms or sentence construction are faulty. Tense and agreement also vary in “They didn’t want to do job so they open,” and punctuation is sometimes awkward, as in “I personally believe that;”. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they reduce clarity. Practise accurate verb patterns, subject–verb agreement and consistent tense, then proofread punctuation.
