IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many parts of the world, more and more people want to continue their education after high school, and the amount of courses avaible has also increased. I believe that this is a positive development for society.
Being well educated has only benefits for both the person and for those around him. First of all, the more educated you are, the more opportunities you are going to have in life. If you continue your studies after school, you are more likely to get a better job. Nowadays, the better your job is, the better your salary is. When you have money, you are able to live life more comfortably. This includes a better house, more travelling and financial safety in general, which is nessesary in these days.
Another thing is that educated people are better for society. With all these different courses avaible, we have knowledgeable people in many sectors. This means each country will have citizens who can improve the quality of life there for everyone. They can contribute to the development of new technologies and stratagies. This will help for the achievement of both economic and social progress. Salaries will be higher, school education will be better and every aspect of life will improve.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that this trend is positive and we should be proud that more and more young people want to continue their education after they graduate high school. This is not only personal development, but also a contribution to the quality of life in countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you consider increased participation in further education and a wider course choice positive. You address both personal benefits, such as improved employment prospects and financial security, and benefits to society, including contributions to technology and social progress. These are relevant reasons, but some claims are broad or not fully explained. For example, the link between higher salaries, better schools and improvement in “every aspect of life” is asserted rather than supported with a specific example. The discussion also focuses more on the benefits of education generally than on why a wider range of courses matters. Develop that point with a concrete example of a course meeting a particular social or economic need to make the argument more complete and convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and the conclusion restates your position. Sequencing is easy to follow, and signposts such as “First of all,” “Another thing,” and “In conclusion” help readers identify each stage. This gives the essay coherent progression, though some linking is mechanical and the ideas within paragraphs could be connected more precisely. For instance, the move from better employment to a better salary and then to a more comfortable life follows a clear chain, but the later list of benefits is not developed further. Similarly, “This means” and “This will help” refer broadly to preceding claims. Use more specific references and explain the relationship between each example and your main point to make cohesion more flexible and precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including relevant terms such as “financial safety,” “knowledgeable,” “development,” and “economic and social progress.” However, the range is sometimes general or repetitive, with “better” appearing several times and broad phrases such as “every aspect of life.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “avaible,” “nessesary,” and “stratagies,” which reduce accuracy. Some expressions are understandable but not quite natural, such as “help for the achievement” and “better for society.” Aim for more precise collocations and vary repeated wording; for example, explain what kind of progress or improvement you mean rather than relying on general claims. Careful proofreading for spelling and word choice would make your vocabulary more effective.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of straightforward sentences and more complex forms, including the comparative structure “the more educated you are, the more opportunities you are going to have” and the conditional “If you continue your studies after school, you are more likely to get a better job.” Most sentences are understandable, and errors rarely obstruct the message. Some grammatical patterns are less controlled, however. In “Being well educated has only benefits for both the person and for those around him,” the construction is awkward and the repeated “for” is unnecessary; “has benefits for both individuals and those around them” would be clearer. The phrase “This is not only personal development, but also a contribution” also needs a more parallel construction, such as “This not only supports personal development but also contributes…”. Continue practising parallel structures and varied complex sentences while checking punctuation and sentence phrasing.
