In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that people depend on their age how to do shopping for their daily expenses. Some people believe individuals depend on their age habits. Others think that shopping depends on their monthly income or revenue. I partly agree with this opinion. This essay will discuss both views before giving my opinion why I partly agree with this statement.
On the one hand, some people believe that shopping habits change with age. People who are fond of shopping, new clothes and purchasing new products such as smartphones, perfume, watches and other daily life expenses, they depend on their age. For example, children always prefer toys and video games, while young people mostly prefer clothes which are trendy. Youth always follow trends like perfumes, clothes and mobile phones rather than their personal preferences, whereas adults do not waste their money on these items. They always prefer such things which improve their life balance and improve the quality of life.
On the other hand, others think that habits do not depend on age because they believe that money is more important for shopping, whereas age does not matter. Such as, if they purchase anything, even if it is a poor-quality product, they do not regret about these items because they have more money. Moreover, money is more important to purchase daily necessary things like study materials, travelling, eating food and other educational needs. So, money is the most important part of human life to keep their shopping habits. Consequently, they can do it more easily and buy everything according to their preferences.
To conclude, some people believe that shopping habits depend on their age because all people have different lifestyles. In contrast, others think that money is everything to purchase new things. For example, they can purchase any expensive things people like, such as branded products, smartphones and perfumes. I strongly believe that these opinions are equally an essential part of shopping habits.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for an opinion on the increase in university education and the range of courses available. However, your essay discusses shopping habits and the influence of age and income on consumer behavior. Because you have failed to address the actual task instructions, the response cannot be scored for task achievement in relation to the prompt provided. To improve, you must carefully analyze the prompt to ensure your ideas directly answer the specific question asked.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' to structure your argument. While the content is irrelevant to the prompt, the internal structure of the text is logical and easy to follow. The progression of ideas within the paragraphs is coherent, even though the subject matter does not align with the task requirements.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic of shopping habits. Phrases like 'daily expenses', 'monthly income', 'poor-quality product', and 'branded products' are used appropriately. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, and there is a lack of more sophisticated or academic collocations that would be expected at a higher band level. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and avoid repeating the same words in close proximity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'People who are fond of shopping... they depend on their age.' There are several grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement and awkward phrasing, such as 'people depend on their age how to do shopping'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not generally impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on improving sentence variety and reducing errors in basic grammar and punctuation.
