Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, an increasing number of people in many countries are persue higher education after completing school, while universities and colleges offer a wider range of courses than ever before. This essay will examine negative and positive impacts of this development before arguing that increased access to higher education and a broader choice of courses are largely positive developments.

On one hand, there are some people who believe that access to higher education may create a skill gap in the society which will disrupt the normal functiong. For instance, if everyone will go to university for higher degrees who would be doing the job of a cobbler or who would like to craft furniture for the people. They argue that high literacy rates will come at a price which may include lack of access to basic services due to shortage of manual skilled workers.

On the other hand, education is one of the most crucial elements, essential to live a better life.High literacy levels are beneficial for personal as well as social development. Education brings empowerment which help people to grow further and achieve their goals in life. Increase in higher education and a wider range of courses will provide people to develop knowledge and skills in various different domains resulting in a society with diverse skills. This will ultimately strengthen different sectors such as agriculture, health, construction and telecommunication. The simultaneous growth on multiple sectors will feed into overall development of the county including economic growth. Moreover, training in different specialized areas have potential to directly improve performance and practices of manual workers from different backgrounds.

In conclusion, normal functiong of a society needs all kind of manual workforce and labour. Nevertheless, I believe that attaining higher education in diverse fields is a larger gain and can also help in improving functioning of relatively less educated workforce.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that the trend is positive. The ideas are relevant, such as the potential skill gap versus the benefits of empowerment and economic growth. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding the 'skill gap' is a good point but could be more deeply explored with more specific examples of how higher education might actually improve manual trades rather than just replacing them. The conclusion is clear, but the essay could benefit from a more nuanced discussion of the 'range of courses' mentioned in the prompt, which is currently under-addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow. For instance, the transition between the discussion of manual labor and the conclusion could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the opposing viewpoints, which contributes to the overall clarity of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated language like 'empowerment', 'specialized areas', and 'diverse fields'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'normal functiong' (functioning) and 'feed into overall development of the county' (country). While the range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. The repetition of basic terms like 'people' and 'education' could be mitigated by using more varied synonyms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'persue' (pursue), 'functiong' (functioning), and 'if everyone will go' (if everyone goes). Subject-verb agreement is occasionally inconsistent, for example, 'training in different specialized areas have potential' (has potential). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The punctuation is generally correct, but the sentence structure could be more varied to demonstrate greater control over complex grammatical forms.
