IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years there have been an increasing number of individuals continuing their higher education after the completion of their school, and also, the many universities are providing new courses for the students. In my opinion this is a positive development. And we are going to discuss why it is a positive development in this essay.

On the one hand, if more and more people are studying it, it helps the universities to earn more profit, as more students means they will pay more fees, and it generates a good amount of money for universities to sustain themselves.

Similarly, the more students study it will increase the overall skilled population of the country. For example, if the more students become doctors and engineers, the nation will have more skilled manpower, which will help the country to rebuild and earn more money. Another reason is that if the universities introduce a variety of courses, they can even call foreign students to study in their countries. For example, an Australian university offers a variety of courses which attract many foreign students from countries like Nepal and India. Which have helped about 40 per cent of their GDP. Because of this, a nation can earn more money, which eventually helps to increase the living standard of the citizens.

In conclusion, due to all the benefits discussed above, I think that the increasing number of people studying and the Universities offering new courses are positive developments for thye society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position that the trend is positive. However, the response is slightly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of the arguments. While the ideas regarding economic benefits and skilled manpower are relevant, they are somewhat repetitive and lack nuanced development. The focus on university profit is a valid point, but it could be balanced with more societal or individual benefits to provide a more comprehensive response. The conclusion is brief and does not fully synthesize the points made. To improve, ensure you meet the word count and expand on your supporting examples to provide a more thorough analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'For example' and 'because of this'. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is functional but could be smoother. The logical progression is generally clear, but the link between the increase in university courses and the specific example of Australian GDP is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph flows naturally into the next would enhance the overall coherence of the piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is a reliance on basic terms like 'good amount of money', 'earn more money', and 'new courses'. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'GDP' and 'manpower', the overall range is limited. There are also minor errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'continuing their higher education after the completion of their school'. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary and collocations related to education and economics to demonstrate a wider range of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'there have been an increasing number' (subject-verb agreement) and 'if more and more people are studying it, it helps' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are some issues with sentence fragments and run-on sentences. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining complex sentence structures will help improve the accuracy and range of your writing.
