Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is largely off-topic. The prompt asks about the increase in people continuing their education after school and the range of university courses available. However, the student writes about government funding for professional athletes. Because the response does not address the specific topic provided in the prompt, it fails to meet the requirements of the task. While the student attempts to present a position, the content is entirely irrelevant to the question asked. Consequently, the response cannot be evaluated as a successful attempt at the set task, as the ideas are not relevant to the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is severely hampered by the lack of relevance to the topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand', but they often connect ideas that are disjointed or grammatically unclear. The referencing is frequently confusing, making it difficult for the reader to follow the intended argument. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks a clear focus, and the transition between ideas is often mechanical or abrupt, which detracts from the overall flow of the writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is limited and often used incorrectly, which leads to frequent errors in collocation and word choice. For example, the student uses 'expend funds' instead of 'allocate funds' and 'slightly deceased' when they likely meant 'decreased'. There is a reliance on basic vocabulary, and attempts to use more complex terms often result in inaccuracies that impede the reader's understanding. The range is insufficient to express ideas with precision, and the frequent misuse of words makes the text difficult to interpret in several places.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that often distort meaning. There are significant issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'both viewpoints is efficient'), sentence fragments (e.g., 'Furthermore, medical treatment in free leads a benificial role'), and incorrect word order. Complex sentence structures are attempted but are almost always faulty, leading to confusion. Simple sentences are also prone to errors in basic syntax and punctuation. The high frequency of these errors makes the text difficult to read and significantly impacts the clarity of the communication throughout the response.
