Student answer (Band 7.0)
A thought of debating whether to watch global news or domestic news has become increasingly common. This is because change in lifestyle has taken mammoth dimensions. This essay will elucidate both the viewpoints followed by my opinion in the conclusion.
To commence with, the dominant reason behind the phenomenon of watching international news is globalization which has a profound impact on everyone's life. To expound, global supply chains and logistics significantly shape international economies and affect global trade, which indirectly influences all the individuals in any country. Furthermore, the international news regarding climate and health, are crucial to improve the awareness regarding worldwide issues such as global warming and communicable diseases. For instance, in 2021, an experiment conducted in Canada showcased that during the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals heavily relied on the global news to gain an insight into critical updates about the pandemic. Hence, the above example vividly illustrates how international news is watched by the populace.
On the contrary, the comprehensive aspect behind the trend of watching national news is the direct influence of the local population. To elaborate, citizens watch the domestic news to update themselves on domestic issues. Since the public needs to make informed decisions, it is vital for them to be aware of the government policies with respect to politics, healthcare and education. In addition, it is also utmost important to remain updated on weather forecasts to prevent any formidable situation. Thus, the aforementioned reason substantiates why it is critical to watch national news.
To conclude, this essay has clearly discussed that globalization is the reason why some people prefer to watch global news, whereas also mentioned that other people prioritize domestic news due to the direct impact on the local population. In my opinion, a balance of both is the need of the hour to remain involved locally and at the same time connected globally.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for an opinion on the increase in people continuing their education after school and the range of courses available at universities. However, your essay discusses the merits of watching global versus domestic news. Because you have not addressed the actual task prompt, the response fails to meet the requirements for Task Achievement. In an actual IELTS exam, this would be heavily penalised as it does not answer the question provided. You must ensure you read the prompt carefully and plan your response to directly address the specific topic given.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
Despite being off-topic, the essay is well-structured. You use clear paragraphing and logical transitions such as 'To commence with', 'On the contrary', and 'To conclude'. The progression of ideas within your chosen (albeit incorrect) topic is logical, and cohesive devices are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. If the content had been relevant to the prompt, this would have been a strong performance in terms of organization and flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using sophisticated terms such as 'elucidate', 'globalization', 'profound impact', and 'substantiates'. The language is generally precise and appropriate for an academic context. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. While the vocabulary is strong, it is being applied to the wrong subject matter, which limits the score for this criterion in the context of the specific task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The grammar is generally accurate with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'Since the public needs to make informed decisions, it is vital for them to be aware of the government policies'. There are very few grammatical errors, and the punctuation is handled well. The control over sentence structure is consistent throughout the piece, showing a good command of English grammar.
