Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both positive and negative aspects of increased access to higher education. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. The arguments regarding 'smartness' and 'depression' are underdeveloped and lack specific examples or logical depth. The position is somewhat clear, but the essay lacks a cohesive argument that weighs the two sides effectively. The introduction is very brief and does not clearly outline the essay's scope. To improve, you should provide more concrete examples and ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-explained point that directly answers the question of whether this is a positive or negative development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often disjointed. Cohesive devices are used in a very mechanical and repetitive way, such as the frequent use of 'now a days' and 'students'. There is a lack of logical flow between sentences, making it difficult for the reader to follow the argument. Referencing is often unclear, particularly with the use of pronouns like 'your' and 'he' when referring to students in general. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') and ensure that each sentence logically follows the previous one.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often inaccurate, which occasionally impedes communication. There is significant repetition of basic words like 'students', 'education', and 'knowledge'. Some word choices are inappropriate or incorrect, such as 'west' instead of 'waste', 'fill proud' instead of 'feel proud', and 'people' used to refer to students. The range is insufficient for a higher band score, as the essay relies on very simple, repetitive structures. To improve, you should work on expanding your vocabulary to include more academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition and express ideas with greater precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that often cause difficulty for the reader. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'students is growing', 'people are did not feel'), incorrect verb tenses, and misuse of articles and prepositions. The sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty or unclear. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with many run-on sentences and missing commas. To improve, you must focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree and that tenses are used consistently throughout the text.
