IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Here and now, we are living in the 21st century; therefore, the number of educated folks is showing an upward trend. In many countries, the proportion of educated bourgeois has increased significantly. I partially agree with this statement.

To begin with, in all nations, generally, students continue their education after they complete school. Most of the students choose colleges and universities for higher studies. It is a positive development for all homelands. However, if all people are educated, that is good for the future. For example, in India, most students want to study for master's and bachelor's degrees abroad.

On the other hand, many foreigners have completed their graduation in another country. And it helps with country development. As an epitome, many indian have completed graduations in countries like Canada, Australia, the USA, or France. Practically, all students pay taxes to the nation's government. And it assists the country's development.

Lastly, some foreigners have also come to India for their studies. India's most popular university is PARUL in Vadodara; many people come to PARUL University for their bachelor's degrees. Like Africans, Nepalis and Chinese, they all do labour jobs in India to pay their university fees and also pay taxes to the Indian government and the government uses the money for country development. That's why studying in colleges and universities is a positive change for the country.

To summery, it is a positive development for the country, the government, and also citizens to study after school in colleges and universities. However, students must study in colleges or universities for a better financial future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the increase in higher education, but the development of ideas is limited. While you state you 'partially agree', the essay lacks a clear, consistent position, as the arguments provided are somewhat repetitive and focus heavily on economic benefits through taxation rather than the broader implications of increased education. The examples, such as the mention of Parul University, are specific but do not fully support the argument regarding the 'range of courses' mentioned in the prompt. To improve, ensure each paragraph develops a distinct point that directly answers whether this trend is positive or negative, rather than focusing solely on the financial contributions of international students.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'and' to start sentences or the reliance on simple transitions like 'To begin with' and 'Lastly'. The logical progression between ideas is sometimes weak; for instance, the transition from discussing Indian students abroad to international students in India feels abrupt. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph flows naturally into the next by using referencing or thematic links rather than just sequential markers.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You use some informal or inaccurate terminology, such as 'educated folks' and 'educated bourgeois', which is not appropriate for an academic essay. There are also some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'homelands' instead of 'countries' or 'epitome' used incorrectly to introduce an example. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more academic collocations and precise vocabulary related to education and socio-economic development, while avoiding informal or overly simplistic phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with article usage ('the country's development'), subject-verb agreement, and capitalization ('indian', 'africans'). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are fragmented or awkwardly phrased, such as 'To summery, it is a positive development...'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall clarity. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic errors like capitalization and article usage, and practice constructing more complex, error-free sentences.
