IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
In many countries, more people are continuing their education after finishing school, while universities and colleges are offering a wider range of courses. I believe this is a positive development because higher education provides people with better career opportunities and allows them to study subjects that match their interests and abilities.
One major advantage of continuing education is that it can improve employment opportunities. Nowadays, many professions require specialised knowledge and qualifications. By attending university or college, students can develop professional skills and gain the knowledge needed for their future careers. For example, students who study computer science can acquire programming and technical skills, which can help them find jobs in the growing technology industry. Therefore, higher education can contribute to both personal career development and economic growth.
Another positive aspect is the increasing variety of courses available. In the past, students may have had fewer options, whereas today they can choose from subjects such as artificial intelligence, digital marketing, environmental science and biotechnology. This allows students to select courses according to their interests and career goals. As a result, people are more likely to remain motivated and develop expertise in areas that are important to modern society.
However, there can be some disadvantages. A larger number of university graduates may create greater competition for jobs, particularly if the labour market cannot provide enough suitable positions. In addition, some students may spend several years studying without gaining practical experience. Nevertheless, these problems can be reduced if educational institutions provide career guidance, internships and practical training.
In conclusion, I believe that the increase in post-school education and the wider range of courses are largely positive developments. They provide people with greater opportunities to gain specialised knowledge, develop useful skills and pursue careers that suit their interests.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have fully addressed all parts of the prompt. Your position is clear from the introduction and is maintained consistently throughout the essay. You provide relevant arguments regarding career opportunities and the diversity of courses, and you effectively balance these by acknowledging potential drawbacks such as market saturation. The ideas are well-developed and supported with specific examples, such as mentioning 'computer science' and 'artificial intelligence'. The response is well-structured and directly answers the question of whether this is a positive or negative development.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices effectively to link sentences and paragraphs, such as 'One major advantage', 'Another positive aspect', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, and the referencing is clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task. You use subject-specific terms like 'specialised knowledge', 'labour market', and 'biotechnology' accurately. While the vocabulary is generally precise and natural, it stays within a safe, standard range. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic academic phrasing to show greater flexibility and precision in your word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your grammar is highly accurate, with the majority of sentences being error-free. You use a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'By attending university or college, students can develop professional skills...' and '...if the labour market cannot provide enough suitable positions.' Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The control over complex structures is consistent, which is a hallmark of a strong performance in this criterion.
