IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

In many countries, an increasing number of people are choosing to continue their education after completing school, while universities and colleges are offering a wider variety of courses. I believe this is a positive development because it provides individuals with better career opportunities and contributes to the development of society.

One major advantage is that people can acquire specialised knowledge and skills that are useful in the modern workplace. In the past, students had fewer choices and often had to select from a limited number of traditional subjects. Nowadays, institutions offer courses in areas such as information technology, artificial intelligence, business management and digital marketing. As a result, students can choose programmes that match their abilities and career ambitions. For example, a student interested in technology can study computer science and develop skills that are highly valued by employers.

Another important benefit is that a more educated population can contribute to economic and social progress. Universities train professionals such as doctors, engineers, teachers and researchers, who are essential for the development of a country. Furthermore, higher education can encourage innovation and help businesses adopt new technologies. Although some people may argue that spending many years in education can delay entry into the workforce, this disadvantage can be reduced if universities provide practical training and work experience alongside academic study.

In conclusion, I consider the increasing participation in higher education and the greater variety of university courses to be a positive development. These changes give people more opportunities to build successful careers and can also contribute to the long-term progress of society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. Each paragraph is well-developed with relevant ideas, such as the acquisition of specialized skills and the broader economic benefits of an educated workforce. The inclusion of specific examples, like 'information technology' and 'artificial intelligence,' effectively supports your arguments. The counter-argument regarding the delay in entering the workforce is handled well by offering a balanced perspective. The response is well-structured and directly answers the question of whether this is a positive or negative development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical progression. Each paragraph has a central theme, and ideas are linked effectively using cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore,' 'As a result,' and 'In conclusion.' The paragraphing is logical and helps the reader follow your argument easily. The transition between the advantages and the counter-argument is smooth, and the use of referencing is accurate. The flow of information is natural, and the structure is coherent throughout the entire piece, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic context. Phrases such as 'specialised knowledge,' 'career ambitions,' and 'economic and social progress' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is precise and fits the topic well, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations that would push the score into the 8.0-9.0 range. However, there are no significant errors in word choice, and the language used is consistently natural and clear, which is sufficient for a strong score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses and relative clauses. For example, 'Although some people may argue that spending many years in education can delay entry into the workforce, this disadvantage can be reduced if...' shows a sophisticated grasp of grammar. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense usage is consistent. There are no major grammatical errors that impede communication, and the writing is fluent and accurate throughout.
