IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In the current day the global trend is such that almost everyone goes on to pursue higher education after schooling. The diversity in the subjects and the available courses in the universities have also increased significantly. I believe this is a positive development, which ensures every individual's right to education and the freedom to pursue a niche of their choice.
In India, pursuing a university degree was never an option to a girl child in many families but with the positive change in the mindset of our citizens more female students are able to pursue a course of their choice. Similarly, government measures in the for of reservation has benefitted individuals who would have otherwise never had an opportunity as such. The awareness that social media has created in terms of all that one can pursue has helped many youngsters gain new career perspectives and even led to pursuing some less preferred courses. The increase in the range of courses in universities reflects our growth as society where students are not just sticking to popular professions but choose what they genuinely feel passionate about. People have come to recognize the value of good education and have taken the effort to ensure quality learning.
While i believe the positive outweigh the downsides of this trend, what is worth highlighting is the growth of uninformed choices, often misled by universities. If a course provides no real career opportunity, does not ensure a return on investment it id the wrong for the universities to market these courses. There should be more measures in place that would allow students to understand the employment options and other growth opportunities available after the course.
To summarize, I believe the growth in university enrollments across a wide range of courses is a positive development However, certain measures should be enforced to prevent students from being misled into enrolling in courses that offer little genuine value and primarily serve as a source of revenue for universities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task, clearly stating that the trend is a positive development. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are well-developed, particularly the example regarding female education in India and the discussion on the potential downsides of uninformed choices. The argument is balanced, acknowledging the benefits while also providing a critical perspective on university marketing. The response is well-structured and directly answers the prompt, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0 or 8.0. To reach the higher band, the development of the 'uninformed choices' point could be slightly more detailed with a specific example.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the social benefits of education and the potential risks of poor course selection. Cohesive devices like 'Similarly,' 'While I believe,' and 'To summarize' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is smooth. The transition between the positive aspects and the cautionary note in the third paragraph is handled well, demonstrating a clear logical flow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and generally appropriate for an academic task. Phrases like 'pursue a niche,' 'career perspectives,' and 'return on investment' show a good level of control. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'in the for of' (should be 'in the form of') and 'it id the wrong' (should be 'it is wrong'), which appear to be slips rather than a lack of vocabulary range. The student demonstrates an ability to use less common items, though a slightly wider range of academic collocations would elevate the score further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over punctuation and sentence construction, though some minor errors persist, such as the lowercase 'i' in 'While i believe' and the typo 'it id the wrong'. These errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The range of structures is adequate, but more variety in complex sentence forms (e.g., using more conditional or passive structures) would demonstrate a higher level of grammatical flexibility. Overall, the majority of the text is error-free.
