Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that the increase in higher education and course variety is a positive development. Ideas are presented and supported with reasons, such as improved job prospects and societal development, which aligns with the requirements of the task. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat general and lacks specific, well-formulated examples. For instance, the mention of a 'recent survey' is vague and unsupported by concrete details. Furthermore, some arguments are repetitive, particularly regarding job opportunities. The response covers all parts of the task satisfactorily, earning a Band 6.0 according to the descriptors where relevant ideas are presented, though some are under-developed or unclear.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays an overall coherent arrangement, opening with an introduction and following with body paragraphs and a brief conclusion, thus attempting a logical organisation. However, paragraphing is somewhat problematic; the introductory paragraph is extremely brief and run-on, and the transition between ideas can be mechanical or abrupt. Cohesive devices are sometimes used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'Commencing with the most salient merit which is wellfare of nation .If students...' where punctuation and linking are faulty. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, leading to a breakdown in smooth progression. This performance corresponds to a Band 5.0, where there is some organisation and use of cohesive devices, but inaccuracies, mechanical repetition, and faulty paragraphing hinder overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'salient merit', 'literacy rate', and 'tertiary education'. However, there are numerous noticeable spelling errors and word-choice mistakes throughout the text, including 'collages' instead of 'colleges', 'wellfare' instead of 'welfare', 'helpfull' instead of 'helpful', 'ivdividuals' instead of 'individuals', 'increace' instead of 'increase', 'offerd' instead of 'offered', 'higher' instead of 'hire', 'employes' instead of 'employees', 'wicher' instead of 'which', 'educted' instead of 'educated', 'tere' instead of 'their', 'apportunituies' instead of 'opportunities', 'prctical' instead of 'practical', 'inhace' instead of 'enhance', 'khnowledge' instead of 'knowledge', 'particalar' instead of 'particular', 'wellsettled', 'conclution', 'eliment', and 'apportunies'. These frequent lexical and spelling errors cause some difficulty for the reader, placing the response securely in Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but the grammatical accuracy is weak. There are frequent and persistent errors in verb forms, articles, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation. Examples include 'Rising number of students going towards...' lacking a definite article, 'more educated ivdividuals has capability' featuring subject-verb disagreement, 'if collages and universities will offerd' showing incorrect passive voice construction, 'if a person do not get...' where auxiliary verbs are misused, and sentences running together without proper punctuation. While the meaning can generally be deciphered, the high frequency of basic and complex grammatical errors strains the reader and pulls the score down to Band 5.0, where frequent errors cause difficulty.
