Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on the trend of pursuing post-school education and declaring it a positive development. Main ideas regarding academic excellence and personal interests are introduced and supported with relevant examples, such as a medical graduate studying music due to passion. The writer also acknowledges potential drawbacks like financial costs and time constraints. While some ideas could be explored in greater depth to reach a higher band, the overall treatment of the prompt is well-rounded, clear, and logically maintained throughout the essay. The stance is consistent from the introduction to the conclusion, satisfying the core requirements of Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction to supporting body paragraphs and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'Personal interest is another reason', and 'However' are used to connect ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, and paragraphing is managed appropriately. However, occasional awkward phrasing in transitional sentences slightly disrupts the natural flow of ideas, placing it firmly within the Band 6 parameters for logical progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'academic excellence', 'financial burden', and 'tertiary institution'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'countinuing' instead of continuing, 'i thing' instead of I think, 'Countinuous' instead of Continuous, 'other' instead of order (in 'in other to'), and 'unavailabilty'. Additionally, phrases like 'individual enrol' instead of individuals enrol demonstrate minor grammatical and lexical lapses. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional and relative clauses such as 'a man who wish to reach the peak' and 'a manager who combines his managerial work'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'a man who wish', 'individual enrol', 'has increased' used correctly alongside 'as increased'), spelling mistakes, and punctuation issues (such as the double conjunction 'Although... however'). While the meaning remains clear and communication is not seriously impeded, the frequency of these grammatical slips prevents the essay from achieving a higher band score.
