IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The more you learn the more you realize how little do you know!

After decades of people abandoning their studies and doesn't see or realize its value, now nowadays people are becoming more aware of the necessity of completing their studies and get a certificate.

In my opinion about the increasing of people completing their studies is a relief and seeing people interested again about studying is something extraordinary especially we are in a century where you value compares to your choices in life and choosing to educate yourself in something you are really into is a blessing .

some people were not lucky enough to get the chance to study at university and having this opportunity must motivate anyone to do his best and actually devote for it.

and let us not forget the efforts of universities in making a room for people to study and increasing the seats for those who are willing to study by heart .

I would like also to give my opinion about this development which is most of the time good because the more people chase knowledge and educate themselves the more we rise as a nation and show to the world how civilized our people are but i would like also to spot the light on something too which is it might be some unwelcome situations, i strongly believe that education and knowledge is for everyone but I'm only against people who chose to come to university or any educational departments for fun and to distract others who are willing to study

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position that the increase in people pursuing further education is a positive development, while also acknowledging potential downsides regarding disruptive behavior. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and relies heavily on personal opinion rather than well-supported arguments with concrete examples. Sentences such as 'now nowadays people are becoming more aware' and the final paragraph touch upon various points—such as national advancement and classroom disruption—but these points remain slightly under-developed and lack extension. The response meets the task requirements in terms of stance and coverage, but to reach a higher band, the arguments need greater depth and more robust exemplification. Consequently, this falls under Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks proper paragraphing, as it is presented almost entirely as a single large block of text with only two basic divisions, which hinders the overall structural flow. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often basic, repetitive, or mechanically linked using words like 'and', 'also', and run-on structures. For example, sentences like 'I would like also to give my opinion about this development which is most of the time good because...' feature long, breathless clauses strung together without adequate punctuation or logical segmentation. While there is an overall attempt to present an argument, the lack of clear paragraphing and occasional confusing referencing place this aspect at a Band 5 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate to communicate the basic message, featuring words like 'necessity', 'extraordinary', 'blessing', and 'civilized'. However, there is a limited range of less common lexical items, and word choice or collocation errors frequently appear, such as 'completing their studies and get a certificate' (tense/form mismatch), 'devote for it' (incorrect preposition), and 'spot the light' (incorrect idiom; should be 'spotlight' or 'shed light'). Spelling is generally acceptable, but vocabulary limitations and awkward phrasing constrain the precision of the argument, aligning closely with Band 5 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts some complex sentence structures, but these attempts are frequently faulty. There are several noticeable grammatical errors, such as direct question word order used incorrectly in a dependent clause ('how little do you know!'), tense and agreement issues ('people abandoning their studies and doesn't see'), and run-on sentences lacking appropriate punctuation. For instance, the entire final sentence is a massive run-on clause containing multiple ideas linked informally. Although the meaning remains mostly discernible despite these errors, the high frequency of inaccurate complex structures means this response sits firmly at Band 5.
