Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the positive and negative developments associated with increased higher education options. A clear position is stated in the conclusion, arguing that the developments are overall positive. Ideas are introduced throughout the body paragraphs, but they remain relatively under-developed and lack specific examples to substantiate claims. For instance, the discussion on labour shortages and increased taxes touches upon valid socioeconomic points, but these arguments are presented broadly without substantial elaboration. To reach a higher band, the student should expand upon each idea with concrete examples, illustrations, or deeper causal explanations rather than moving quickly from one point to another. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fulfilling the basic requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs tackling pros and cons, and a concluding statement. Paragraphing is utilised to group ideas logically, separating the positive aspects from the negative ones. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly deployed, such as "Firstly, the pros of having these development" or "In conclusion to this". Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, and logical progression between sentences can feel disjointed due to abrupt shifts in ideas. The management of cohesive links requires a more natural flow and greater variety of transition words to enhance the overall readability and internal cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to discuss education and its economic impacts using terms like "employment," "literacy rate," "inflation," and "elite class." However, there are notable limitations and frequent inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and collocation. Examples include "occured" (occurred), "studied" instead of studying, "hike" used as a verb where 'rise' or 'increase' is required, "scenerio" (scenario), and "differenciation" (differentiation). These lexical errors and awkward formations occasionally detract from the reading experience, placing this response firmly in the Band 5 category for lexical resource due to the noticeable frequency of vocabulary limitations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but the grammatical accuracy is hindered by frequent errors in punctuation, subject-verb agreement, and tense consistency. Examples of errors include "It not only help us" (helps), "the courses offered... has raised" (have raised), "encourges professor as their is more demand" (encourages professors as there is), and "cannot afford by all the people" (cannot be afforded). Punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after periods and commas, are also pervasive throughout the text. While the meaning remains mostly clear despite these issues, the high density of structural errors prevents the response from achieving a higher band score.
