Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether the increase in higher education and course availability is a positive development. The writer takes a clear positive stance, stating that it benefits both individuals and the economy. Ideas are presented, such as gaining field-specific knowledge and creating a skilled workforce, and supported with examples like Japan and Finland. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive, and the generalisation about certain countries being famous for tycoons is imprecise. Furthermore, some arguments lack deep elaboration, placing the response firmly in the Band 6 category where relevant ideas are presented, but some are under-developed or unclear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised correctly to separate distinct points, such as career benefits and course variety. However, the progression is sometimes hindered by awkward transitions and repetitive sentence structures. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'On the other side', and 'In conclusion', but referencing and linking are occasionally mechanical or faulty (e.g., 'If the someone have degree...'). Paragraph transitions could be smoother, and logical flow is occasionally broken by confusing phrasing. This fits the Band 6 descriptor where the overall arrangement is coherent, but cohesion is sometimes faulty and referencing is not always clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate basic arguments about education and the economy. The student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'workforce', 'exceptional work', and 'betterment', but these attempts are frequently accompanied by inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word formation (e.g., 'skilled full' instead of 'skilled', 'famous tycoons', 'outstanding researches'). Spelling errors also occur, such as 'option' instead of 'opinion' and 'foe' instead of 'for'. Although communication is not severely impeded, the frequency of lexical errors prevents the response from achieving a higher band, making Band 5.0 the most appropriate reflection of the student's limited and error-prone vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The response demonstrates an attempt to use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('If the someone have degree...'). However, grammatical accuracy is very weak throughout the text. There are persistent and frequent errors in basic sentence structure, subject-verb agreement, articles, and preposition usage (e.g., 'Many countries in the world now a days has rise', 'pursue further to study after the school has increase', 'deep their knowledge'). These errors frequently cause strain and difficulty for the reader. Because complex sentences are often faulty and simple sentences contain basic mistakes, the grammar profile aligns best with Band 4.0, where errors are frequent and occasionally distort meaning.
