Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing the trend of increased higher education and providing a clear position that it is a positive development. Ideas are extended with reasons and examples, such as referencing the rising literacy rate and the role of government funding, though some examples like the WHO statistic are somewhat generalized or loosely integrated. The main position remains clear throughout the essay. The response presents a well-supported argument that easily aligns with the Band 6.5 to 7.0 descriptors. For a Band 7, ideas are extended and supported, though there is a slight tendency to over-generalize or rely on unverified statistics. Therefore, a score of 6.5 is awarded, as some supporting arguments could be more thoroughly explained.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as technological influence versus societal benefits. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly awkward, seen in transitional phrases like 'To continue with that' and 'Finally, all the efforts are paying back'. Referencing is mostly clear, though some pronouns and links create slight disruptions in the natural flow. Paragraph two and three demonstrate logical sequencing, but the logical progression within sentences occasionally falters due to punctuation or phrasing issues. This places the response comfortably at a Band 6.0, as the overarching structure is sound despite mechanical cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'tremendously', 'vitality', and 'posterity'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'men power blindlessly' (manpower blindly), 'condcuted' (conducted), and 'carrier opportunities' (career opportunities). Spelling errors like 'internatinal', 'centuary', and 'stonger' also occur. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching Band 7. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient to convey the intended meaning, matching the requirements of Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. For instance, sentences utilizing relative clauses and participial phrases ('making it more effortless to understand') show ambition. However, frequent grammatical and punctuation errors are present, including subject-verb agreement issues ('number of courses... has been increased' and 'people has to improve'), missing articles ('an education', 'crimes rates'), and awkward phrasing ('raise has been occured'). While these errors do not severely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from achieving a Band 6.5. A Band 6.0 is appropriate as the majority of simple sentences are accurate, but complex structures contain persistent errors.
