IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays an increasing number of people are choosing continuing their education after completing their schooling and the courses universities are offering also shows an incresing trend. In my opinion, this is a largely positive development because it provides people with better career opportunities and allows them to study subjects that match their interests and abilities.
One major advantage of this is that it will increase the job prospects of peoples after completing their college and will surely increase the gdp of their country, so it will be beneficial to both the country in which they are residing as well as the person himself. In today's competitive job market, many professions require specialised knowledge and qualifications. By pursuing higher education, students can develop practical skills that are relevant to their careers and the current job market. For example, a student interested in technology can study artificial intelligence, data science or machine learing instead of following only traditional computer science courses. This will help them to pursue their choosen job afterwards.
However, there can also be some disadvantages to this trend. It will increase the competion by a large extent for certain positions. Furthermore, some students may choose university courses simply because they believe a degree will guarantee a well-paid job, without considering whether the subject suits their interests or the actual demand for that qualification. This could result in unemployment, waste of time and money.
In conclusion, although the expansion of higher education can create amongous competition in the market for certain positions, I believe that it is predominantly a positive development. More people can acquire advanced knowledge and skills, while the wider variety of courses gives students greater freedom to choose an educational path that suits their individual goals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout. The student introduces a well-supported argument that the increasing trend in higher education is a positive development. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as mentioning specific modern courses like artificial intelligence and data science rather than just traditional computer science. There is a slight tendency to over-generalise in parts, such as stating that higher education 'will surely increase the gdp of their country', but the main arguments regarding career opportunities and individual interests are well developed. Overall, the task is properly fulfilled and meets the criteria for Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The essay is divided into logical paragraphs with an introduction, two body paragraphs exploring advantages and disadvantages respectively, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used appropriately to guide the reader, such as 'One major advantage of this', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. Referencing is generally clear, and paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. While some transitions are a bit formulaic, the overall structure flows smoothly, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 7 score.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, such as 'specialised knowledge', 'competitive job market', and 'individual goals'. There are some attempts to use less common items with general awareness of collocation, although a few minor spelling and word-choice errors occur, such as 'choosen' instead of chosen, 'competion' instead of competition, and 'amongous' instead of enormous. However, these lexical errors do not impede communication, and the vocabulary is adequate for the task, placing the response comfortably at Band 6.5, which rounds to Band 6 or 7 depending on overall control. Given the good lexical variety, a Band 6.5 is well justified.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional structures. There are several error-free sentences, alongside a few grammatical and mechanical errors, such as 'choosing continuing their education' (should be 'choosing to continue') and 'prospects of peoples' (should be 'people'). Punctuation is generally sound, and despite occasional slips, the errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure the intended meaning. This performance fits the Band 6.5 descriptor well, showing good control with occasional lapses in complex structures.
