IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Education in definitily one of the most important aspects of life. With the increase in people continuing their education after school, the range of courses has also increased. This indeed is a great thing as people now have more available options to study than ever before. In the past people had limited options to study and had to choose from the avilable options. This results in people compromising their interest and and forcing themselves to study something which they are not fond of. This indirectly afftects the productivity and interests of both the people and the professions.
By increasing the number of courses for students to choose from ensures that the students have a wide variety of fields to get into. This way students only choose the subjects of their liking and have a hight probabilty in succeding in them. Fields like Data Sciences, Cyber Security, Automation, AI Engineering and many more didnt existed few years back but now they are at all time high and arguably the highest paying professions out there. This has only been possible by including these courses to the educational curriculam. I also want to study and pursue Data Science which is a quite new field and im lucky that it is now being offered widely. If the universites didnt allowd to expand their range of courses than i would'nt have been able to study this resulting in me pursusing something else which i dont like whole heartedly.
This inclusion of more courses has a great positve impact and opens more doors to employment in fields that were not discovered in the past.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses the prompt directly by discussing whether the increase in further education and course variety is a positive or negative development, clearly taking a positive stance. The writer successfully highlights the drawbacks of past limitations, noting that students were previously forced to study things they were 'not fond of', and illustrates the benefits through modern examples such as Data Science and Cyber Security. Ideas are extended and supported with personal reasoning, though the conclusion is slightly brief and could have been developed further to fully explore the long-term societal impacts. Nevertheless, the main parts of the task are adequately covered, fitting well within the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range. We award a Band 7.0 for a clear position and well-reasoned arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a logical overall progression, moving from an introduction of the topic to past constraints, present advantages, specific examples, and a concluding thought. Paragraphing is used to separate ideas, though the structure could be improved by creating distinct body paragraphs rather than relying heavily on longer blocks of text. Cohesive devices are used adequately with words like 'This indeed', 'In the past', and 'This way', although referencing occasionally feels slightly repetitive or mechanical. While referencing is generally clear, paragraph division needs more finesse. This profile aligns closely with the Band 6 descriptors for cohesion and paragraphing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully attempting less common and contemporary professional terms such as 'Data Sciences', 'Cyber Security', 'Automation', and 'AI Engineering'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'definitily' instead of definitely, 'avilable' for available, 'afftects' for affects, 'succeding' for succeeding, 'didnt existed' for didn't exist, 'curriculam' for curriculum, 'universites didnt allowed' for universities didn't allow, and 'positve' for positive. These errors do not impede communication since the meaning remains clear, but they prevent the writer from achieving a higher band. This performance is characteristic of Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional forms such as 'If the universites didnt allowed to expand...'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several recurring errors with verb forms, auxiliary verbs, and tense consistency, including 'didnt existed', 'didnt allowed', 'im lucky', 'i would'nt have been able', and missing apostrophes in contractions. Punctuation and subject-verb agreement also show occasional slips (e.g., 'This increasing... ensures'). While communication is rarely impeded and the writer successfully attempts complex constructions, the density of errors keeps the performance within the Band 5.5 to 6.0 bracket. A Band 6.0 is awarded as simple and complex sentences are mixed despite errors.
