IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There is an ongoing trend nowadays that the number of students continuing their education even after completing schools, and also the range of courses available at universities and colleges has increased. This is a positive development because of stability and enormous options.
One of the main reasons for pursuing higher education is that students can secure their future. Education provides students with a better understanding of theoretical concepts with practical training, allowing them to prepare for internships or jobs. This allows them to get a chance to work in a company and enhance their expertise in a specific field. Moreover, students want to gain knowledge in a particular field, which may enhance their productivity in a particular sector and contribute effectively to their field. By providing specialized knowledge, students can easily gain expertise related to a specific field with deep analysis. For example, students may prefer Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning course rather than Information Technology, which has a specific syllabus. Thus, learners prefer specialized courses rather than general, which can prepare them for performing specific tasks.
Another significant benefit is that students can get numerous options when the range of courses has been expanding. Individuals have authority to choose based on their personal preferences or choices, which align with their goals. For example, students have plentiful options in IT field compared to the past, which can provide opportunities for students to select from them. As a result, they may become happy with their career, which allows them to work in their desired field.
To conclude, in some countries, the number of people continuing their studies after completing school, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased. I think this is a positive development because it makes individuals' career more secure and provides them with more options.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a position that the increase in higher education options is a positive development. Relevant ideas are presented, such as job security and course variety, but some points suffer from under-development and repetition. For instance, the explanation of how specialized courses improve productivity relies heavily on generalized restatements rather than fully extending the argument with concrete consequences. The conclusion effectively restates the main position, but to achieve a higher band, the student needs to develop all main ideas more thoroughly with specific, fully elaborated examples rather than looping back to previously stated points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and the body paragraphs follow a logical progression focusing on stability and course options respectively. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover', 'For example', and 'Another significant benefit', to guide the reader through the text. However, some referencing is slightly mechanical and repetitive, particularly the frequent reliance on phrases like 'a particular field' and 'specific field'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but to progress further, the student needs to integrate cohesive devices more naturally and vary transitional phrases to ensure smoother connections between ideas without relying on formulaic structures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate main ideas about education and career progression. There are attempts to use less common items, such as 'specialized knowledge', 'theoretical concepts', and 'practical training'. However, there are noticeable limitations and occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'Individuals have authority to choose' instead of 'Individuals have the freedom to choose', and 'become happy with their career' rather than 'find fulfillment in their careers'. Spelling is generally accurate, but upgrading word choice and refining lexical collocations will be necessary to lift the response to a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'One of the main reasons for pursuing higher education is that students can secure their future.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omissions and awkward prepositional usage in phrases like 'prefer Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning course rather than Information Technology'. While these errors persist, they are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. To reach a higher level, the student should aim to increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and ensure tighter control over articles and singular/plural noun agreements.
