| Overall | 5.0 |
Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. Additionally, it must be noted that the length requirement was not met: the student's response contains 206 words, falling 44 words short of the 250-word minimum, with 9 words copied from the task prompt excluded. The student expresses a clear position that the trend is a positive development, but the ideas presented remain limited and under-developed. For example, while the writer mentions economic development and personal freedom, these points are stated rather than extended with concrete examples or explanations. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to ensure the word count requirement is fully satisfied and expand upon each main argument with detailed supporting evidence and robust examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation present in the response, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, with an introduction, a body paragraph, and a brief conclusion, but the central body paragraph is overloaded with numerous short, disconnected points. Cohesive devices are used rather repetitively and sometimes inaccurately, such as the frequent reliance on 'Education' or 'Therefore' to link ideas. For instance, the transition between sentences like 'Education can facilitate a person's career' and 'Nowadays, people are acknowleding...' feels abrupt. To improve, the writer needs to group related ideas into distinct paragraphs and employ a wider, more natural range of cohesive devices to create a smoother, more logical progression throughout the essay.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The vocabulary used is quite repetitive, with words like 'education', 'essential', and 'courses' appearing frequently. There are noticeable lexical errors, including spelling mistakes such as 'amoung', 'beacause', 'independency', 'acknowleding', 'Individual's' (incorrect apostrophe use), and 'accesisibity', alongside collocation issues like 'cherishes us with knowledge'. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and impede the precision of the argument. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, incorporate less common lexical items accurately, and carefully proofread the work to eliminate basic spelling and word-form errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a very limited range of structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic sentence patterns. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of grammatical inaccuracies include subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'practical skills that helps', pronoun errors like 'enhance it's skills', and awkward phrasing like 'every oppressed people'. Punctuation errors are also present, such as missing spaces after periods and incorrect comma placement in 'I believe, it indeed is a positive development.' To move up to the next band, the writer must incorporate a dependable mix of complex structures and reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors by ensuring strict adherence to rules of agreement and tense.
