IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Enhancing the education through multiple courses offer at universities and college after school is showcasing the positive literacy rate of country. In my opinon improving in this is a positive developement.

Essentially, people have multiple choices but choosing education over all other things is the good for many countries. Countries put efforts on their people, once they have quality education or certifications they can grab good opportunities or work in future. This also bring financial improvement of the country. When countries offer such kind of courses they influence international talents to come and work in their country to support the economy. It is a continous chain and also influence young generation to aware and follow it.

At the same time, mostly people have an interest in getting the certification or sometime they only want to enroll in the subject but not proceed to complete it. This reflect a negative aspect that they waste time, money and efforts in the process. Now, countries are making strict and hard process, standard and system through which people need to pass the initial criteria to access the course.

In addition, I want to share an example which I personally witness, few of my colleagues applied for the international course in summer on "Leadership" which was arranged by international trainer but unfortunately due to visa rejection they cannot attended the course and lose the efforts made by the organization.

Hence, people who are continuing the education is the best thing to do to upgrade self for future both personally and professionally. Whereas, offering the best level of quality education is also very important to meet the individual expectations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you consider the growth in further education a positive development, and the conclusion restates this view. You give relevant reasons, including improved employment prospects, economic benefits and the possibility of students wasting resources when they do not complete courses. However, the response addresses the two linked developments unevenly: it says more about continuing education than about the expanding range of courses. The point about course non-completion is relevant but would benefit from a fuller explanation of how it affects individuals or society. The visa-rejection example illustrates a barrier to attending one course, but its connection to whether the overall trend is positive could be made clearer. Develop these points with more specific reasoning and examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, paragraphs presenting benefits and a drawback, a personal example, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “At the same time,” “In addition,” and “Hence” help signal the direction of the discussion. However, progression is sometimes uneven: the paragraph about course non-completion shifts to governments’ admission systems without clearly explaining the connection, and the visa example feels separate from the main argument. Some references are also unclear, as in “improving in this” and “they waste time,” where the reader must infer what “this” and “they” refer to. Make each paragraph develop one central point and use clearer references and transitions between claims and examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt vocabulary suited to the topic, including “certifications,” “opportunities,” “international talents,” and “economy,” and the main ideas remain understandable. There is also some effort to use less common expressions, such as “initial criteria” and “individual expectations.” However, inaccurate word forms, spelling and collocations reduce precision: “opinon,” “developement,” and “continous” are misspelled, while “positive literacy rate” and “the good for many countries” do not express the intended ideas naturally. Phrases such as “strict and hard process” are also imprecise. Build a reliable range of education-related collocations and check spelling and word forms; this will make your arguments clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You use both simple statements and attempts at longer, more complex sentences, for example the sentence beginning “When countries offer such kind of courses.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but grammatical control is inconsistent. Subject–verb agreement is incorrect in “This also bring” and “This reflect”; verb forms are faulty in “they cannot attended” and “they lose the efforts”; and the opening sentence has an unclear structure. Articles and plural forms also need attention, as in “the country” and “universities and college.” Some sentences join several ideas without clear grammatical relationships, particularly “It is a continous chain and also influence young generation.” Practise accurate agreement and verb patterns, and divide complex ideas into well-formed sentences.
