IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Yes, it is a positive development for the society because everyone wants some skills and become a speacialist, this is the only going possible when a students are choosing some specific stream and become master on it.This is one of the reasons the universities are having a vast number of courses which actually helps student to choose easily because they have alot of options. Some universities are providing minor courses as well apart from the major ,which is benificial to the students. These minor course can become plan B for some students who endup the major not really well or loose their intereston their major course , this can help to get a job and having a whole different skills. I am a student pursuing graduation in biotechnology which gives me joy however I have a minor in mass comunication which gives me an idea of different world apart from science. After my third of college I realised I like doing graphic designing , animation and editing contents and I did endup becoming a part time graphic designer in one of the science platform . This job combines my both knowledge of science and the creativity of graphic designer as a mass communication student. Only school knowledge doesn't help and provide the experience which college gives to the student interms of making the whole new personality, communication skills, presentation skills and connections which is needed if a person is going for any jobs or buissness. College life is the best time to explore interms of what exactly the student wanted to do because they will meet different kind of people from different world which gives an idea to buildup their life in a better way. College also support by giving friends which will teach many things , during the whole periods students are gouing to have different kinds of activities, assignments etc which teaches time managemnet . Education is weapon which kills the societal norms and myths .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you consider the growth in further education and course choice positive. You address both the value of university study and the wider range of courses, and your biotechnology and mass communication example gives the argument a personal, relevant illustration. The discussion of combining science with graphic design also shows how varied study can create practical opportunities. This meets the task well, but the support is uneven: points about confidence, communication skills, friendships and time management are listed rather than explained, and the conclusion is reduced to the broad statement that “Education is weapon.” To strengthen the response, develop fewer benefits in more depth and explain how they apply beyond your own experience.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a discernible line of thought: you begin with course choice, move to your own experience, and then discuss broader benefits of college. However, the response is presented as one long paragraph, so the shifts between these ideas are difficult to follow. Several points are added through repeated “which” clauses and “also,” rather than being grouped and linked in a clear progression. For example, the move from your graphic-design job to communication skills, then to college friendships and activities, feels abrupt. Use separate paragraphs for the main argument, personal example and wider benefits, with a focused concluding paragraph. Clear topic sentences and more precise referencing would make the relationships between ideas easier to understand.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate relevant ideas, including “minor courses,” “graphic designer,” “communication skills” and “time management.” The personal example also gives you opportunities to use topic-specific language. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural combinations are noticeable, such as “speacialist,” “alot,” “endup,” “intereston” and “whole different skills.” Some expressions are vague or repetitive, including “different world” and repeated references to “student.” These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your main point, but they limit precision and naturalness. Check spelling carefully and learn common academic collocations; for instance, describe students as developing expertise or gaining transferable skills rather than becoming a “master” of a stream.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the account of your studies and part-time work communicates a sequence of events. However, control is inconsistent, particularly in long sentences that join several ideas without clear grammatical boundaries. The opening, “because everyone wants some skills and become a speacialist,” has a faulty verb pattern, while “when a students are choosing” has an agreement error. Other examples include “These minor course can become” and “College also support,” where plural forms and subject–verb agreement are not controlled. Articles and sentence punctuation also need attention. Break long sentences into shorter units, check that subjects and verbs agree, and review verb forms and articles during editing.
