IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries these days, the number of people continuing their education after school has increased, and the range of courses available at universities and colleges has also increased.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In my opinion, the increase in the number of people pursuing their education further after school and the institutions providing a wide variety of courses to allow students to choose form is a high positive development.

A strong and well educated youth is always a country's greatest asset. Not only do these people benefit themselves by education and knowledge but they also posess such strong leadership qualities to help their nation. They can achieve more and invest more in the development of the country. Youth is the real reason why a country rises or fall. The perfect examples are China,Japan and also the students of Pakistan.

With a wide variety of courses to choose from, students have the liberty to become more and more comfortable with exactly what they want to choose. They do not have any limits to their career path because of the limited options the universities provide. Many universities also provide merged courses as well so students can widen their niche. For instance, my university not just provide only IT and programming courses for the CS students but they also provide different language courses, and also the management, commmunication, professional practices courses as well. That plays a crucial role in just building the technical foundation of students but also help them as they step into the real professional world.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that with more people continuing their education and a vast number of majors available in the universities is a really great impact as it will help people get deeper knowledge in what they are ambitious about and want to grow further in it to achieve the perfection.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the opening and conclusion: you consider increased participation in further education and a wider course choice positive. You give relevant reasons, including the contribution educated young people can make to national development and the value of combining technical study with communication and management courses. The example from your university helps make the second point concrete. However, the claim that youth is “the real reason why a country rises or fall” is broad and is not explained with specific evidence; the references to China, Japan and Pakistan are also left undeveloped. The discussion of the benefits to individuals could be extended further. Develop each main reason with a clearer explanation or example to make the response more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. The progression from national benefits to course choice is logical, and phrases such as “For instance” help introduce an example. Some links and references, however, are not fully clear. In “That plays a crucial role,” it is not immediately precise whether “that” refers to the range of courses or the specific combination of subjects. The conclusion also combines both main ideas in a long sentence, making the final point less easy to follow. Use clearer references and organise each paragraph around one main claim, followed by explanation and evidence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “leadership qualities,” “career path,” “technical foundation” and “professional world,” which helps communicate your ideas about education and employment. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “merged courses” and “widen their niche,” but these are not natural or precise in context. Several spelling and word-choice errors—“posess,” “commmunication,” “choose form” and “high positive development”—reduce accuracy and polish, although the overall meaning remains understandable. Aim for more conventional academic collocations and check spelling carefully. For example, describe courses as “interdisciplinary” and say students can “specialise in an area of interest” rather than “widen their niche.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including the inversion in “Not only do these people benefit themselves…” and the conditional-style explanation of how courses support students. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. In “my university not just provide,” the subject requires “provides”; “courses … help them” should agree with the plural subject, while “that … plays” needs a clearly identified singular subject. The phrase “a country rises or fall” also has inconsistent agreement, and the final sentence is difficult to control because several ideas are joined together. Review subject–verb agreement and build longer sentences around one clear main clause, checking punctuation and agreement before adding further detail.
